use skin texture bump maps with displacement maps?

I'm wondering if when using a high def displacement map for Genesis V7 would one delete the bump maps?

thanx

displacement maps don't work very well in Iray, this is why most of us will use Normal and bump maps.

Reality/Luxrender does not like displacement maps on figures, usually causes seams where the textures join. I stick with bumps, normals, or both. If you really want the high def displacement maps your best bet would be to convert them into normal maps then load them into reality one by one (torso, ears/face/lips, arms, legs).

But otherwise, no, you do not need to delete the bump maps. You could turn them off if desired by dialing them down to zero in reality (so no need to actually detach the textures) but not necessary afaik.

The reality forums are best place to ask things like this btw: http://preta3d.com/forums/index.php

I am curious if youve actually tried a render using the displacement maps, did it work? Were there seams? I am guessing you are aware that in oder for the displacement maps to render you need to turn on teh subdivision for each material zone in reality to at least 1? Otherwise the maps will have zero effect. And its this lux subd that cause the seams from what I understand. YMMV.

thanks for the reply and info gederix but  I've decided  to stick with bump and normal maps after all....I may use displacement for some items however not for skin.

will learn how to generate my own normal maps but I was curious if a normal map from one texture set will work for a different set?.....that is as long as it's the same UV.

I really like displacement maps personally. I did some hand painted displacement maps to help me get some more realism for my G2F character, Athyn:

The displacement maps helped me create knuckle creases, tendons, knee ridges, etc.

    so I'll ask again

if the uv is the same are normal maps interchangeable?.....meaning could I use a normal map from one Genesis Female 3 texture set  for another texture set that is lacking a normal?

It will probably look off. A normal map will only really go with the texture that it's made with. It makes the small details of the 2D texture map become more 3D. Things like eyebrows and moles and creases all need to be in the same place as the normal map or it would look off I think.
