Guitar Poses?

Silly me,  I actually thought a pose set with a guitar would have more than one pose with someone actually "playing" the guitar.  SMDH!
Would have been nice for Genesis 3 to finally have a set like that;  guess we might get one in the future.

Nice set otherwise, but I don't need anymore cheesecake.

Which guitar are we talking about?

    Exactly my sentiment!

I bought it simply because of the type set it is.  Total Pin-up.  Love it!

The thing is musical instrument playing positions are actually rather hard to pose, and such pose sets really are freaking useful time savers, so this was mildly disappointing.  We have cellos, but nobody has done a pose set for the instrument since the Genesis days.  Drums fare a bit better with poses for Gen 2,  and violin  is tops so far with the excellent Violin Soul (in fact Violin Soul might be the only musical instrument pose set anybody has done specifically for Gen3 figures)*. We have tons of cheesecake already to the point now that they are almost interchangeable;  you buy one, you're almost  guaranteed to have a few duplicate or near duplicate poses from any other set you've purchased.

*Correction  Sultry Poses and Props [for piano]  while almost suffering the same fate does  have two poses of the figure actually playing the piano and not simply laying across it.   Bravo for that.

Is it just me or is the scale on that particular guitar a little off? It seems too big for the girl holding it. Easily scaled though.

    The description says, "

    • 20 Poses for Genesis 3 Female
    • 20 Poses for that load and parent the Props

    "

I'd expect 20 guitar poses based on that.

I don't think I am able to directly plug something else where but do a search for the Boss on another marketplace. Excellent Tele with strap and strap/guitar specific poses.

  • Considering how popular the Guitar Hero games were for several years in the running, I am surprised there aren't more commercially available props/poses. I'd imagine there's a market for them. Then again, there are some truly well-crafted freebies out there if you're willing to look, and some older pose packages of playing guitars that can be converted from the pre- G3 days. I am not sure if well-crafted freebies are created to compensate for the lack of quality commercial products or if the well-crafted freebies are created because the market for commercial products is so niche as to be a waste of the vendor's time. Chicken or the egg . . .

The guitar itself in the latest package looks like a nice clone of the Fender Jaguar and I am thinking of picking up the set for that reason alone. Most of what I've seen for sale here and elsewhere are Stratocaster-based and that gets tiresome after a while. I like the Jaguar because it's a very punk/New Wave look. The included poses look perfect for reproducing the types of poses that appear in in Guitar World's buyer's guide and calendar or the old adverts for Dean guitars and it's being marketed as such. Not 100% my thing but if I buy the package I will just pose my own figures around the guitar. Posing the hands in proper chording postures is the most difficult bit.

I started a scene last night with that guitar and was also very dissapointed that there wasn't a single pose actually playing the guitar. The guitar itself is nice though, haven't decided if I want to return indecision

Edit: Unless I was missing something, was there a smart-prop pose holding it?

I have an old .99c PC+ guitar that jumps into the selected characters hand.

Is the whammy bar on the guitar posable?

Honestly I didn't get that far into fiddling with it, was pretty turned off the product when I realized I had an hour of posing/parenting ahead of me just to make the character hold it.

Really I don't mean to be a jerk to the PA, it's a beautiful prop and I'm sure it took a lot of time to create, it just seems to me that putting in a smart-prop pose of the selected character holding it would be a no brainer. frown

Wait a tic. There are no smart-prop poses to match each of the included poses??

I wouldn't know about that, I assume there are. I was specifically trying to have the character hold the guitar in a playing position but I could find no such pose or smart-prop load option for that scenario specifically.

I'll pass on this one also. I am not a fan of the Fender Jaguar body style and I have plenty of cheesecake poses I can add a guitar to. Being an ex musician I'd also love a pose set with actual playing poses along with some rock attitude poses for GM3.

Anyone interested in instruments and accessories, there are quite a few at the sketchup warehouse that can be converted for DS use. I recently found a nice strat, a warlock bass, some custom pics, these amps and this nice destroyer

  • Like others, I didn't go for this primarily because of the lack of playing poses, but there were also details on the guitar itself that bug me a bit as a prop too.  The frets just stop short on the fretboard at 17.  There's no strap button at the tail.  Small things, but...

Just visited your 'noob gallery'.  You've got a lot of awfully nice renders in there.  Just had to say that.  wink

Ok that's wierd, there is a pose in the promo images of the char holding the guitar in a playing position. I'll look again tonight but I couldn't find that pose when I tried to use it yesterday. I may owe the PA an apology blush

  • GreybroGreybro Posts: 2,502

Yeah, thinking pass. The map looks good but I'm a strictly Strat, Tele and Les man myself. Always though the Jag looked unbalanced and goofy and they are darn heavy.

I actually really liked the poses (wouldn't say they're 'cheesecake', exactly, because they struck me as great for hard-edged characters), but the lack of much in the way of actually playing the instrument is what mainly made me wish-list it.

Fastbike1, those poses are for Genesis, not Genesis 3. Most characters people craft, these days, will be for G3 (if only because of G3 clothing typically coming with Iray materials).

Thanks for the links. The legends outfit is all about the outfit and Elvis, so pass, LOL. The rock star action poses are just goofy. I don't know many fellow musicians that move like that or play that high up on stage. I have had the merlin electric guitar addon in my wishlist for awhile, it's just the 3D Merlin brand on the products turns me off on it, plus there is no strap. Thanks again though.

I like the Rock school M4 LP poses by Simon 3D over at Rendo, but they are for M4 and I'd like specific ones for GM3.

So I got home and loaded it back into the scene I was working on last night. While there is a pose with the character holding the guitar, it is not technically holding the guitar. The guitar and amp are a separate pose that loads them in parented to the figure, (appears to parent to the figures hip?) but not directly to either hand.

So technically yes, the guitar parents to the figure when you load that playing pose, but basically if you want to have the figure holding it in a different playing position, you have to manually move the guitar into position.

Now that I have it in the scene (and to be fair, it does look MUCH better than the old V4 era guitar) I'm going to use it, but I really wish the parenting had been handled better.

I have Merlin Studios Guitar and Props set has 3 poses for G2 which I used for G3 took a bit of fixing of the poses for my M.O.M. render and others and the Guitar Set from Simon3D so could have a base had no poses. There are a few textures but nothing fancy compared to this new set  which makes it tempting for that. There used to be a morphing guitar here was pretty old dated looking but you were able to have a flying v and warlock among the options.Out Of Touch/ShanasSoulmate have a set with outfit, poses, props for g2f few actual proper stage holding guitar and mic poses and two maybe 3 playing

also on that other site R lok up guitars then look down page for Industrial Punk Rock first time noticed damn that is good for the poses alone no bass but get a stage, lights, mics, drums, keyboard,  guitar with strap :)  and a few textures it's old and for M/V 4 but chaep and looks cool also Simon3D also has a pose set on his other store too Rock School V4 Jag Poses that looks pretty good lot of actual playing have to have his guitar and bass for that which has a strap too these artists sell here too so hopefully they do g3 versions here as well as other creators as we do need a lot of different versions/variations for music stuff too

just an added note on the Industrial set justr read more on it made for poser may work in daz again old set ds2 listed so don't know if it'd work in new daz pity that but that is something that'd be good for g3 daz

  • we need a rock star pro bundle here or two Daz you could do a male and female one to split it up say guitars and bass in one with clothing, hair and poses that can work with G3F orG3M and in that one include male or female figure and in the other male or female with again clothing poses hair and drums, keyboards and other bits and pieces split over the two and don't forget the picks and straps. Oh clothing have different styles of course maybe for the metal rock have those chains spikes extra common in 80's and belts need belts ladies had those big ones with large belt buckles. Also good excuse to include lots of different makeups for both the ladies and guys glam and death metal and others

It might not be specifically for G3M, but if you use this script to convert older poses to Genesis 3 ('V4 to V7' works just fine for M4 to M7) and adjust a few things here and there, I've found that it works pretty well in a pinch.

But I second (third?) the call for Genesis 3 native -both male and female- poses with playing guitars and other instruments for that matter (like a synth keyboard).

About guitar poses, I usually make my own one by memory or at least from photography of real guitarists. It's easier than you might think.

The hardest part is to ajust the damn guitar strap. And I don't even talk about the cable that connect the guitar to the amplifier.laugh

Forget about the cable. Go wireless. Lots of transmitter / receiver combos available these days. Should be easier to model.
