I create a new thread about 3D scanning in order not to further sidetrack another thread.

The idea is to share some impressions about the possiblites for those who are interested.

The question has been raised:

"Why would anyone want to scan real human people?`"

When you model a human character from scratch in software like Zbrush you tend to create "idealized" characters.

Idealized means: "represent as perfect or better than in reality"

Many creative studios have started to cast real humans for their 3d characters.

Instead of taking an artificial character and try to make him or her look more human by adding flaws and asymmetry

you start working with actual humans and create a believeable 3d version.

Is 3d scanning replacing  manual sculpting and painting skills?

No. You still manually edit and customize 3d scans in modeling software like Zbrush.

You add and remove details as needed.

Light Stage

There are very high end solutions like LightStage

Digitizing Photorealistic Humans Inside USC's Light Stage

-> Such stages are created in many different sizes for different scanning purposes.

Instead of buying such a stage you rather hire an experienced team to do the scanning for you.

Example:

Infinite-Realities

Handheld Scanners

A more affordable solution are handheld scanners.

Ninja Theory used the Artec Scanning technology for their latest project.

The following video gives a good impression about this workflow and why it was choosen:

Have you seen what Doob is doing?

Renderpeople talks about their 3d person scanning system here: https://renderpeople.com/3d-scanning/  They also sell rigged and posed 3d scanned models of people.

Besiedes the cost you'll see that a problem with 3d scanned people vs the DAZ models is each person is a unique set of polygons which means they are all unique models and cannot share hair/clothes/makeup/skins etc like the Genesis platforms can.  I think you could in theory use a tool like Wrap http://www.russian3dscanner.com/ to take a 3d scan of a person and make it into a Genesis morph, but you'd lose a lot of detail since you can't make HD morphs without the PA tool which would kind of defeat the whole purpose of going to the lengths/cost of scanning people.

I'm not quite so sure. It's a bit unnerving or maybe just a cultural expectation adjustment. They are good though. I guess they are really just fancy photos although somewhat more limited in use for home and business decor.

Cool thread. I have d/led a few photoreal models from sketchfab and while they look good, the UV mapping is usually very chaotic. ShaaraMuse3D over at Rendo does a great job with 3d scanned objects and they work great in DS.

I love the renderpeople site and a great concept. Thing is you are thinking from a DS perspective, think from a 3D perspective. If DS had proper FBX import, you could use these scanned people for great looking backgroud people.

There are 4 samples you can d/l from there, 2 rigged and 2 posed. I loaded up the dennis posed one in a quick DS scene and at a distance it looks pretty good. The object is 100K and comes with a single high res diffuse and normal map. there is a lower res version at 30K, but I wanted to see what the high poly one looked like. The rigged one is lower poly, but is completely posable in carrara

If they offered higher res rigged soldiers or police, at $40 a figure that would be a great deal for me since I could have more than one in a scene, they would look good and save on resources

  • Thank you for this post! I am an artist and I want to do a 3D scan of myself and import it into Daz3D Genesis if it's possible.

Is there an affordable scanner that will allow me to import my body scan into Daz3D Genesis and allow me to morph, or manipulate my body image more muscular?

     Thank you for any wisdom!

    Hello,

    I have the same question.

Is it worth scanning anyone and be able to import into Daz?
