Solved: ISO: eye-mask and u-shaped pillow (for character sleeping on a plane)

As the title says, I'm looking for an eye-mask and a u-shaped pillow - like the kind you use when sleeping on a long-haul flight.

Ideally the eye-mask will be for G3M but I can make it work if it's for other figures.

Thanks in advance

I promise I won't mention how easy this would be in a modeller like Blender or similar...

    I promise....

Yes, I have blender :p - but if there's one already out there, it'll save time.

The eye-mask fitting nicely to G3M is a bit trickier ;)

Yes, I have blender - but if there's one already out there, it'll save me the trouble of uv-mapping it :p

The eye-mask fitting a human face is a bit trickier ;)

I won't mention that you just add a torus, then select all the faces that don't look like a u-shaped pillow, delete them, then close the ends by selecting vertices and scaling on Z axis to 0 (hit "S", then "z", then "0"). Remove doubles and you're done. If you want to make the pillow thicker just use Alt-S. And add a Subdivision Surface modifer to make it all smooth and stuff.

To UV just ALT-select an edge on the middle and it will select the loop around the pillow. Tools/Mark Seam. Select All, hit U, then Unwrap.

    Done.

    But I promised I wouldn't mention it so I didn't smiley

Ooh, then my thanks for the mini-tut must be implicit (since you didn't mention it) - I've always had trouble getting uv-mapping to behave as I think it should (in blender/hexagon/anything).  So any tips along those lines are gratefully received yes

Edit: - turns out following your mini-tut was actually quicker than downloading and installing something LOL.

    I found a sort-of eye-mask at sharecg (it's just a strip for G2F rather than a sleep mask but it'll do)

    Implicit thanks again

I also won't mention that if you want piping (?) around the edge that's a bit trickier...

I had to scratch my head a bit. You need to ALT select the seam edge loop, then convert to a curve. Then in the Curve settings you can bevel it to give it thickness, and select FULL instead of HALF to give it a circular cross section. Then you have to convert the result back to a mesh.

Yeah, it's one of the Blender insanities that giving a loop of edges some thickness isn't that, it's converting to a curve and bevelling. Ridiculous. Nobody thinks of that as a bevel.

Anyway...here's my result after you drop the pillow on a tile floor.

Oh and the eye mask thingy is just drawing a curve in the outline of the mask and filling it with a mesh...

For the eyemask, Zeddicus has a set called Z Blindfold at Renderosity, which contains an eye-mask and two other designs, with fits for G2F and G3F.  Auto-fits to the males as well and currently on sale for $4.50

I won't mention, that one can create different kind of pillows in Blender using bezier curves, as well.

Of course, if one can UV unwrap them nicely, which I have some trouble at the moment.

Dude, I already told you how to UV such a simple shape:

"To UV just ALT-select an edge on the middle and it will select the loop around the pillow. Tools/Mark Seam. Select All, hit U, then Unwrap.

    Done. "

And I even showed you the nice, clean result. That gives two nice clean islands, and you can select each island and do what you want with them. For example if you want the pattern to be continuous at the seam.

Was that directed at me? Coz I already replied my implied thanks for that, followed your advice, and am rendering with the pillow right now (will share later once it's cooked) smiley

Cheers for the suggestion - I went with the freebie I found in the end - can't spend too long on this render - but I might pick that up in the future.

Sorry, no it was for Artini who said he/she was trying to figure how to UV unwrap the pillow he/she posted.

    Fisty,

Did you manually add the wrinkles? I was gonna throw something together in Blender and export that to VWD to shrink it on a character's head for the wrinkles, but got sidetracked with some other stuff that had my Blender busy doing renders.

BTW, why would you want to rig it? Can't you just use it as an OBJ parented to the head? What's the benefit of bones?

Yes (polygon modeling in Hexagon with a little displacement and smooth brushes for the wrinkles. I curved it around his head and added thickness and piping before I put in the wrinkles)

It'll auto follow morphs and expressions if it's rigged.

Or I guess I could wait - that looks fantastic!

Yeah, that's the main reason I couldn't do it myself - I need it to follow the morphs - I've got no idea when it comes to rigging.

    Thank you so much smiley

Rendering shall commence shortly - I'll post the results when it's done.

    Edit: Render is cooking.

Just needed to add: Woah!  Not only does the eye-mask conform perfectly to my morphed G3M, it also has plenty of adjustment morphs and a morph to move it up on the forehead - talk about attention to detail.  Great work Fisty, and thanks once again yes

I have unwrapped the pillow in two ways. The first one with the one inner seam. I attach zipped obj file.
