Metallic hair?

Any suggestionson making metallic hair? I'm working on a pseudo-Ayesha render scene (think Guardians of the Galaxy Part 2) and I just cannot get her hair - any hair - to take on a nice sparkly metallic golden look. I know you can't just apply a metallic shader as that messes up the look, combining all of the strands into what I'll call panels. It's goign to come down to tweaking the Surfaces tab settings, but I haven't been able to arrive at quite the right ones. Any pointers or ideas?

Thanks!

Bob

    Here's what I recommend:

    • Apply a blonde shader to the hair (or the lightest colored mats that the hair comes with).
    • Navigate to the Daz Uber shaders and find the "Car Paint - Sunburst" shader.
    • Make sure the hair is selected in the Surfaces tab.
    • Hold down Control and Double Click on the shader. A window will pop up. Where is says "Images:" choose "Ignore".
    • Then hit Accept.

This will keep the maps in place but apply the metallic shader on top.

You can then farther tweak the colors in the surfaces tab if needed.

Be warned, metallic surfaces can greatly increase render times. Just a heads up. :)

    Good luck, Bob! :D

I'm going to be more general.

A good way to get anything to look metallic is to turn the Metallicity slider up. This makes it behave like a metal when interacting with light. In real life metal objects give their own color to reflections. This is one of the most important things that cues our brain into knowing a thing is metallic.

For gloss, make sure roughness parameters are down and reflectivity is up for a shiny appearance.

Then, of course, adding metallic flakes will give the sparkle appearance.

heheh Thanks, Greg! :D It's just a quick render to show what that looks like on hair. It probably would look a bit better with the Metalic Flakes Size lowered a bit. :)

  • You can apply a metal shader btw, as long as the opacity maps remain.

    Great idea, Diva.

Works nicely on the clothes, as well.

Oh that's pretty! She looks almost like a being from Mount Olympus (except the modern clothing lol). :)
