Render Daz3d Hair in Maya With Mental Ray

Hello everyone,

I created a character in Daz 3D and exported him to FBX and imported him to Maya 2017. It seems like everything was imported just fine in Maya but all the material types were changed to Phong. So, I changed them to Lambert for a better look.

The challenge is with the hair. For some reason, when I render the scene using Mental Ray, the hair appears a bit plastic :/ ... but if I do Maya Hardware Render, it seems ok.

Any idea what am I missing here? Which material type should I be using?

Since, it's a Daz 3D hair product, I thought perhaps someone might have a clue.

Since there is only a very small, percentage of users here with access to Maya and Mental Ray, I doubt you will get many answers. Mental ray isn't that far off from Iray and both are Nvidia, so whatever tweaks you have done in DS for Iray should work for Mental Ray, just have to play with the settings. If it appears plastic, turn down specular and increase the bump or normal

    Hey FSMCDesigns,

Turns out, you weren't far off with the Bump maps. After I imported the FBX into Maya, I noticed three hair materials (scalp, hair1 and hair2). Turns out, in DAZ all three of them had Bump maps but in Maya none of them had the Bump maps! After I added the Bump maps and played around with the weight values a bit, the hair started to look much better! It's not the same as Maya's nHair but it's close enough to how it looks in Daz!

    Thanks!

Glad it worked out for you. I model in 3dsmax and tried awhile back before Iray to do my renders in maxwell and the material setup was a nightmare, which is why i render in DS only now, LOL.

  • Anyone having this problem... I've exported a Daz3D character with hair.... Everything seem to work fine but the hair renderes wrongly...rendered it with both Arnold n Vray. I used both hair material n standard material. Still nothing.

Hey Olumhenses, I'd start looking at Daz's Surfaces tab and see what kind of materials are applied to the hair. In my case, the FBX for some reason didn't include the bump maps or Maya failed to import them.
