Does anyone know of a good program that creates 3D text that can be typed in from the fonts that live in my computer and can be rendered wtih such surfaces as metallic, stone, plastic, jewels, etc.? If I'm creating a greeting card or a book cover or whatnot, I would like to add 3D text as a title or caption, but with my Windows fonts. I used to have a program years ago that could do this. I'm reluctant to go online and try downloading software that may come from suspicious sites. Any good ideas?

Perhaps something like this:

Hexagon
is free too
Carrara does excellent Texts Props!!! I have played with those a lot and will do most fonts with ease!
I, also, found this link for other texts props https://direct.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/13423/lettering-props

yes I myself use Carrara for everything
but Hexagon as well as being free has a new beta and also has a bridge to DAZ studio for those who use that
I know no one wants to hear it, but Blender can do this too and then if you want to render your created text outside of Blender you can export it as an obj.

I tried Blender and I can't make heads or tails of it. A video tutorial and a PDF sheet of instructions both didn't match what my Blender looks like, so I couldn't figure out how to change the word "TEXT" to another word. I might check out the Font to Mesh Express Converter to see if this will do what I want.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
In Blender you have to switch to Edit mode to type on screen, and when you're done just export as OBJ. Imo Blender is the most convenient tool for this :)
Edit to add: Blender also imports SVG (Inkscape format) files and can turn them into 3D, so f that's easier you can type in Inkscape (free program similar to Illustrator) and then import to Blender. There's an easy to understand youtube clip how to work with these (try search make 3D logo in Blender).
I heard somewhere else something about trueSpace. Does anyone know anything about that? I seem to remember that from a long time ago. I googled it, and there seems to be a lot of places where it's a free download, but I'm really paranoid about downloading software from free sites. Last year, I had a bad experience when I downloaded something and ended up being invaded by some sort of Chinese antivirus software that I never asked for and had a horrible time getting rid of it. I don't want that to happen again. Is there a safe site where freeware can be safely downloaded without coming with extra things I didn't ask for?
why not Hexagon?
Calgari Truespace was bought out by Microsoft who offered it for free for a time and then discontinued it. However, it seems to still be available from CNET:http://download.cnet.com/TrueSpace/3000-6677_4-10187286.html and they are considered to be a trusted source of software. But be careful to click only the correct download button and not the advertising download ones.

I've tried to do this with Hexagon and it just crashes on me. When I get a word set up, Hexagon crashes and closes on me before I can save it. My sister was able to do it and we have identical computers. For some reason, Hexagon doesn't like me.
I've also tried Blender, but any tutorials I've found for that, the screens don't look like what my Blender looks like. Blender's interface is too cluttered and I can't find the tool easily, some I can't find at all. This is very frustrating, considering it should be a really easy thing to do: create a 3D word that I can import into DAZ Studio and use the shaders.
Silo from Nevercenter has 3D text support now - http://nevercenter.com/silo/

Hexagon can make them, hit and miss depending on the font choice. Carrara can too.
For trueSpace look here https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/228316/have-a-go-at-truespace-the-unsung-freebie
Its been a while since I used this, but I recall a couple of issues with it.
The meshes it creates have triangle facets that made the POSER smothing not work. Maybe DS does not have the same issue.
There were sometimes polygons missing.
Let's not forget our very own Carrara!
Daz has this

and this

Again Hexagon 3D 100% free and it makes 3D text

There is also the free Wings3D modeler which can easily create 3D text from the fonts on your PC.
