I am very impressed with all of these great back stories and motivations.  I generally prefer my 3D with as much whimsy as possible, and very little realism.  My avatar comes from a work-in-progress I did for a challenge with the theme of war.  One-eyed cyclopstritch?  Goofy three-fingered toon opponents?  Harsh shadows?  You betcha!

My forum profile picture is us (me and Todd) taken somewhere in Serbia ;) I've only changed it because people wanted to see humans behind the machine.

Usually everywhere I post art it's my girl Faith, by the name Faith Fawkes with one of my infamous first Octane renders (I do better these days) several years ago, with a kitty hat and a cigarette. She started pretty much as the digital projection of me back on Genesis first generation, by mixing Aiko5 and some morphs by the looks of pictures of myself until I learned how to morph in Blender and make my own textures, and later through Gen2 and Gen3 and nowadays Gen8 she shed off her Aiko base and became more of a "normal" look girl, somewhat different and less toony than her first iterations. She got the last name Fawkes by Guido/Guy Fawkes as my favorite line is always "You can call me V" since nobody in their sane mind can pronounce my name right (it's Verica, diminutive of the name Vera which translates to Faith). Most of my renders, unless strictly certain character themed, are just Faith doing things, usually contemporary themes and clothes, no nudes (ever) and she is always blonde. She's been my alias for over 4 years now and probably for the good chunk of forseeable future :)

As a balance Todd has a digital girl named Briana Baxter, adventurist and troublemaker, which was quiet a conversation starter when we first met as both girls by now became 3D personalities and take good lead in both of ours art. They're both even shown in my Fabric Factory main promo image here in the store although we rarely render each others girls, lol.

I've always liked your smoking girl very much

<== My Avatar is Lochan for M4.  I have used variations of the name Ceo (See-oh) in games and forums for years.  I have had either no avatar or a female one as Ceo is a female character.  I use this Avatar because I want to project that I am a male, and I do like his look.

The TRUE Ceo, and character I use most often is below.  She is Rumor for Genesis 8 Female by Silver.  I knew I was onto something when I first created her and posted her picture on my FB page.  I have less than a dozen friends on FB, none usually comment on ANY renders I post.  What can I say - they are not artsy and are usually too busy with their 100+ or 300+ 'friends' to encourage my artwork.

Ceo got tremendous reaction from my friends because I posted the line "She doesn't think she's pretty" with the picture.

I got everything from I was wrong because 'she is badaz and doesn't care what people think' to 'she's the next Lara Croft' and I was 'downright crazy to think she was a shrinking violet'.  (Almost) EVERYBODY had a reaction to her, and that told me that I was on the right track with this Ceo.  Here is today's Ceo render.  smiley

  • <= I don't photograph well (bad RBF, weird smiles) so a few months after downloadung Daz I set out to create a new iconic virtual me. My goal was to create something close enough to RL me that my friends would recognize it but also capture some of my online identity and username. I like it and I now use it everywhere, even on Facebook.

Well, first off, it's adorable.  But I do have a questuion... It's hard to tell by the thumbnail, but are those wings in the background of the "real" you? ;)

The other image (below) that I use in a lot of places is a selfie I took into Photoshop and sort of sloppily painted over. To this day, this is still the only selfie I've ever taken and its the only photo of me taken in the last 15 years, because I am a ninja who is able to sense cameras and duck behind things just before the photo is taken. cheeky

I coudl be wrong, but isn't there something int he ninja code about not admitting it in a forum or something? ;)

  • I've always been an avid gamer, so art from games makes its way into my avatars. The older Final Fantasy games used illustrations by Yoshitaka Amano, and thus the games introduced me to his works. When David Bowie died, I felt compelled to use one of Amano's portraits of Bowie.

Amano created a number of portraits of Bowie, which you can find some here along with the story behind them. https://kotaku.com/when-a-final-fantasy-artist-and-neil-gaiman-did-sci-f-1752362348

But since this wasnt my creation, I needed to make my own. That's when I used a render of myself created from Facegen as a Mass Effect character, one of my favorite gaming series. (We don't count Andromeda...)

It is a pretty accurate likeness, except I generally don't wear armor in public. This is Genesis 2, I have considered updating it since Facegen updated and works even better now. I'd also like to use an actual game model for a more accurate outfit, and use some things I've learned since then.

In other places I might use icons of Mega Man sprites, the flaming skull of Gurren Lagann, or still shots of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, usually old Joseph in his "OH MY GAWD!" pose from the manga, or sometimes the anime. Because hearing the Japanese voice actor over act these lines from the manga (which are spoken in English) is just about the best thing ever. Plus he is dressed like Indiana Jones, which is icing on the cake. Half the fun of JoJo is finding what American music references wind up as characters or the name of an ability. The manga has been going for an incredible 30 years, though it has changed greatly during that span.

Over the weekend we went and saw the movie "The Quiet Place" for my son's 16th birthday.  I have to say, that your Facegen avatar looks so similar to John Krasinski in that movie!

My favorite renders are ones where the expression really conveys something.  I have to say that I love the expression on the one with the cigarette... I can almost hear here saying "Are you shitting me??"

My actual avatar is Bubba, purchased as an M4 and upgraded across generations. He's the only older black male on the market that I know of -- and as far as I've been able to tell, always has been -- and I'm an older black male, so. He's had a few different avatar versions over the years. Most recently, he's been very steampunk. Not sure why.

There's no background on the forum avatar version of the image, because it didn't read at that size.

    forum avatar Bubba

A version of him used elsewhere is ... differently steampunk, I guess. And possibly a touch Mad Hatter.

    DA avatar Bubba

And here he is back in 2015, as a G2M, I'm guessing, given the hair and date.

That's awesome, thanks for sharing.  Also, I would obviously never be one to leak out any information,m so I definitely would never tell you to watch the store this week, because you may actually see an image of an older black male used in one of our promotions that will happen this week. :)

A few days to think about it, and I decided it was about time I honored my last ferret. Have had ferrets since 1999, started to breed them in 2000. But as Kotetsu got older, he had shown he had a real hard time to handle the summer heat. So I took the decision to put him down before the summer hit as both me and the veterinarian was unsure if he would actually survive another summer if it turned as warm as the one before had been.

In this picture I have just moved into my apartment and Kotetsu is exploring the place, it's a warm day (he's still young there and hadn't gotten the heat problems yet) and I had opened the door to the fridge to put in some groceries. Tets decided that he should perform a ferret wardance in the fridge, where he knew that one of his favorite treats could be found (cucumber). Still miss that little rascal, and always will, but such is the life for those with animals. They rarely live as long as us.

Probably should have edited the earlier post I made, but didn't thought of it until I had already written most of this above, hopefully it's alright anyway :)

It's all about misdirection! Now you don't know if I'm a ninja or not! cheeky

It's like the old joke we ninja tell:

Q:How many ninja does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A:Three. One to screw in the lightbulb and one to disappear into the shadows just before it comes on.

(By the time you ask "What happened to the third ninja?" it is too late! wink)

<--- Mine is Alexandra Valente, one of the four main characters for the "Alebrijes" a visual novel we're hoping to get funded. I've been re-designing the character art now that I understand DAZ more and have a large enough library to make characters unique. Of course, there's a lot of post-work to get them looking just right. Here's a bigger picture:

And here's she is full body, showing all her poses and a sample of her expressions:

The other character I've made and tend to render a lot is Kratos Leonhart, one of the main characters of an original story I've been working on for more than a decade.

Here he is with his partner Helios when I had just getting started with DAZ (half the time I didn't know what I was doing):

    Two years later:

And here he is again (trying out the new altern8 shaders):

Those look great.  Thanks so much for sharing!  It's just neat to really get to hear some of these back stories, and how personal the avatars can be.  Just wait until we're all floating in our sensory depravation tanks with our VR rigs attached.  It's gonna be all about the avatar (except of course for those of us who break free and choose to figt against the Matrix.)  Sorry, was my geek showing there? ;)

Either that or we're going to live in a detached society (where we are a chip, not a body) like they showed in the nextflix show "Altered Carbon" (haven't read the book it's based on yet). That is both an interesting approach to the future and a scary one as well!

This is a fun and really interessting thread.

My forum avatart is just a tiny image of Sam Elliot, it just kinda fits my forum name, and me to a certain extent (though I don't ride horses now).

Since for the thread topic we can use figures/characters we have created, and use a lot, I think I might have something to add here. When I get a figure I like a lot, I tend to use her repeatedly. I seldom start out with a name, or a specific idea. The figure usually comes from a character I've purchased, and have modified to fit a rather vague vision of what she should really look like in my head. i tend to do a lot of fantasy type renders, so my characters always need to portray a very strong woman in both character and physique. They also need to be able to fit into a wide variety of roles. For example Amazon Queen, pin-up model, space adventurer, post apocalyptic warrior, or even the girl next door. I'll modify her physical strength to fit what I need for a given render with muscle/fitness morphs, but otherwise she is always the same texture set and morphs (though the shaders will change to match lighting etc.). My "girls" almost always have a bit of The Girl from the same generation dialed in, just enough to give her a hint of "The Girl" effect.

My current favorite, Trista, who uses a combination of Sunny 7, V7, Teen Josie 7, and of course a touch of the girl, with several other face and body morphs added in. She is strong, very intelligent, feisty, confident, and rather small in stature compared to the typical "amazon" (or V7). She is an semi-exotic beauty, always ready for the next adventure, or a photo shoot.

Another favorite is Sapphire, which is loosely based on the Sapphire figure for Genesis 3 sold here (the original name just fit so well, I couldn't change it), with a lot of additional morphs, which of course includes a bit of V7 and G7, plus a lot of other morphs. Sapphire fits the role a Amazon Warrior quite well, but can also be a cute and exotic beauty. She commands respect with her physical strength, yet she can also is a show a warm and soft side.

    Trista in "Wild Wild West"

Trista in "Deep Space Interlude: Wishing You Were Here"

    Trista (photo shoot)

Trista in "The Prisoner....?" Trista is in the middle, and Sapphire, is on the right. (I hope to some day get the focus and time to do the second image that explains the question mark in the first image title.)

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Sapphier in "Anticipation"

    Sapphire in "Reluctant Warrior"

    Sapphire in "Quiet Repose"

Sapphire in the left (with a little added height reduction)

I probably should do a Genesis 8 portrayal of my avatar.

  • You know what would be fun to see re: Avatars, is any where people have used Facegen, but then put their face (or partial morphed themselves) into a toon character.  Anyone got one?  I might have to go try that!

I've made a couple FaceGen to Avatars and I've tried different styles but since I pretty much look like an overgrown Lucky Charms leprechaun it winds up looking like a generic character and not so easily recognizable a caricature as say when someone does a caricature of Einstein (eg 3DU's Scientist) or a similarly unique character. They use FaceGen, DAZ Genesis 3 Head & Body Morphs, Morpheus, 3DU Toon Generations, and freebies from Mythcons on ShareCG.

The left one was meant to be in the modern Disney style, think Frozen or one of their new 3D movies.

The right one was meant to be like those muppets from the old Phil Collins / Genesis music video from the 80s called  'Land of Confusion'

I think I got the styles right in both although I couldn't manage to make the beach babe look like she is actively squeezing his biceps and gasping.

    Avatars derived via FaceGen Morphs
Babe the Blue Ox and Paul Bunyan Montauk, New York

I'm now going to try to do the TV shows Lost in Space (again but with a functional B-9 robot and the Jupiter 2 space ship), Route 66, and Sanford & Son in the next couple of weeks.

I also did this one below using no FaceGen but which someone pointed out is a pretty good caricature of Bill & Hillary Clinton but honestly it was completely unintentional and I was going instead for the look of a properly reserved English couple (probably where the majority of Bill & Hillary's ancestors are from so that's not a surprise) that are loathe to hurt the mice in the English nursery rhyme Three Blind Mice.

However 3 Blind Mice caricatures were strictly DAZ 3D / 3DU / Joe Quick morphs that I adjusted from my Bewitched scene. I'm lazy like that, especially when a caricature already fits or nearly fits the expected look for a story.

Mine is the Bone Doctor.  When I was creating promos for the product, I wanted to make a character that suggested an actual Bone Doctor from the 18th or 19th century, or at least a Mad Scientist.  The actual character is just Michael 7 with Emaciated dialed WAY UP (250%).  I am so tickled by this curmudgeonly character and the banes of his life, his skeletal assistants, that I like to work them into as many products' promos as I can smiley
