Streamlining Content Library - Questions

fastbike1fastbike1 Posts: 4,078

I'd like to streamline my Content Library and remove all V4 and Genesis 1 related content from active use.

I use DIM and the Content Library in Studio (never Smart Content or Connect). Is there a straightforward way to do this with DIM.

I can easily do it manually through the Windows 7 file manager, but this would leave Studio expecting the content, yes?

I haven't been able to come up with a good DIM filter for Genesis only. A Victoria 4 filter only shows about a dozen items, but I didn't expect much more because Victoria 4 content is in the "Poser Library" folder of my Content Library.

Any other things I should be aware of TIA.

I've often thought of doing the same thing. I use G8 now so I can't use any morphs, skins or poses from earlier gens (I've got morphs and poses converted, just with there was a good converter or better yet, UV template for G8. Not too thrilled with the geograph thing)

Clothes are fine for any gen, but a bunch of the other stuff I don't need anymore. Sure I can select in DIM and uninstall, but some characters I got were bundled with clothes...

Genesis 8 male and female use Genesis 3 male and female uvs by default. To use other uvs on Genesis 8 male and female (for example, Michael 7 or Victoria 7 uvs), there are these products. On sale now too at a nice discount ;)

There aren't any good filters as I discovered whilst re-organising my folders, although certain ones work pretty well; I have 30 folders now.

I started again from scratch, and installed dforce in a folder; hair in another; clothes to another. I didn't separate people, they just got their own folder, as also did IRAY and 3delight shaders, props & environments. And many more, including custom stuff I've done, and other stores too (including freebies).

Searching by pose, genesis (genesis 2, genesis 3 and genesis 8 - male and female), V4, hair, dforce; other useful ones are outfit and clothes, and even dress.

I also found a good way of getting rid of certain items was to use vender names such as FWSA, Ly, as well as Victoria 5, 6 etc. I also moved PoserCF files to their own folder; no idea if that will cause issues, but so far not.

None are perfect; as an example: bun catches the odd hair that doesn't contain hair in its name. :)

Leave Props and Environments till last. (NFC why there are different names.)

I really wish Daz enforced better naming conventions.

I actually find vender names useful; remembering something is from a certain vender helps track it down when the PA is known but little else.

    Edit

And whilst I think about it, use spaces at the end: "Victoria " yields different results to "Victoria".

  • The V4 stuff should pretty much be on the Poser side of the house.  I think you may find a lot of it can't be removed completely with DIM simply becuase it may not have been installed with it.  Depends on how long you've been using DAZ.  It can of course be removed manually, it would be time consuming.  Genesis1 should all be DIM uninstallable.  There are some really good creatures with Genesis 1 though so you might want to think about removing that.

I copied my complete library; well renamed it (OLD in front).

I copied it incase I failed to track down all the custom morphs I've done; they now have their own folder.

I have everything in a logical (to me anyway) folder structure. Manual removal through Windows explorer would be relatively simple. All of the Victoria 4/Poser stuff has it's own root folder so I can just delete the folder. It's already backed up to a network drive.

I'm trying to avoid uninstalling individually via DIM becuase I have >3600 items installed. I have a spreadsheet that catalogs all of my content.

If the Poser stuff is deleted via the OS and the path removed from the Content directory manager, will there be any adverse impact on Studio?

If I can just delete V4/Poser stuff as above, DIM uninstall may not be too bad. I had be limiting the Genersis removal to all characters (not creatures), all hair, and some/all clothing. Props/ environments etc would stay. I already have  deleted all 3DL resources, all PS files and all Legacy and Poser CF files.

I have been having a lot of problems with daz studio crashing upon start up recently (unresolved), the ticket agent said to delete everything and start fresh which I have done several times.
every time I do reload studio through install manager it reloads some 1000 products which I would love to understand how to remove these from IM, like permanently erase??!!
    any clue?
Just because I bought it 5 years ago doesn't mean my computer needs to be filled with it today.

You can pick and choose which items in DIM to download and install. Instead of clickng the box at the top of the list, click the box next to the item/s you want to download/install
