What are people looking for in toon hair?

Do you want to be able to mix and match parts?

Bangs, ponytails, braid, etc. How about rigging?

Do you want fully rigged hair so you can bend it the way you want?

Lots of textures?

Lots of morphs?

Long hair?

Short hair?

Medium hair?

Updos?

Loose?

Unique styles?

Well, I can't think of anything else so let me know what you want.. If you want a certain style let me know, I'll add it to my list

This is what I am working on, it's in Blender but it will be in Daz soon. the head, ponytail, and bang halves are separate. This is for easy rigging and easy customization. I plan on using this hair in my webcomic, so I would want to have the bangs all the time while changing the style of the long. Since I need it, I thought others would need it. The possibilities are limitless! As I make them I'll release them to the Daz Store so everyone can use it and of course, so I can make a little profit on the side.I just need to get rid of the n-gons made by the boolean modifier to fit Genesis' head. I'll make sure that I include 3 and 8.

Anyhow, enough rambling, here are the pics. Note, this is designed for a female but the head hair will work for a male with a shorter ponytail. There will be a no ears morph that goes over the ear section, I will also include that no ears morph if I can.

Modular and bones instead of morphs.

Duly Noted, I'll make sure they can mix and match but they will have a few morphs here and there for fitting and stuff.

N-Gons, Blender Boolean Modifier to fit it to the genesis head - what did you do? Did you cut off all of the hair that intersects with the head - if so why for dForce to work?

In case of n-gons and identify other topology issues I can recommend you a Blender addon called MeshLint <-WikiLink if you not already using it get it.

Yes it was for dforce and I already have meshlint. What good modeler would be without their Blender Mesh Checker? (I wonder why it doesn't come with Blender :P) I wound up triangulating them, there was over 500 of them.I have a version of it without doing that in case I wanted to go back, but it seems to fit the Genesis head better without the intersecting hair.

If you have male and female versions then I would like to see hair that is mix and match. A bob hair uni-sex for example. I also do not like realistic hair for toons, I prefer the plastic type props we saw for Sadie and Sam. The new toon boy looks "chuckified" with real hair on him. I won't touch him until I see what hair products will come out.

Make toony products for toon characters. I don't want over realistic props and clothing for characters that are not meant to be realistic.

Well, I'm working on hair at the moment, then I'll see about expanding to toony outfits. I know that hair is harder than clothing but I'm backward like that. I'll tackle the hardest first so that the rest will be easy.

Piec-y or spikey hair, sort of like the hairs made for Star.  Something like this for males would be awesome:  https://www.pinterest.com/pin/688487861759968341/

It's always nice if you have longer and shorter hair options in shaping.  There are a lot of realistic hairs that we all try to toon up, so I agree, I'd rather have some toonie looking hair out of the box.  The pacer hair is a good example of what works for me.

Can't wait to see what you come up with :)  Your example looks really good for long hair.

I'll keep the boys in mind.

Awe, Thank you! That's actually for an original character's hair but I thought I would release it as a trial. Now I see it would be a very wise choice. The masses are screaming for some new toony hair. Any examples of what people want will be a huge help.

I used free anime hair for this one.  It turned out great.  I think it's a good example to go off of.

One thing that you'll find is that people will STILL want to put textures, including sometimes transparency maps, on the hair.  As most hair-maps I've seen run the strands from top to bottom, it's a good idea to UV-map the props that way, too, based on the lay of the "strands" in each lock.  I'd do this even if you're not including any maps at all.

Actually, my technique has all the uvs running straight down the strands in a grid. They unfold in a tube top to bottom. There are no points, the "points" are actually really close vertices. I don't know how to do transparency maps, so I will include the UVs in their own folder so that people can do it themselves until I learn. I'm an excellent modeler but the only way I can do textures is within Blender itself. Sometimes it takes me days to get a texture looking right.

Of course, there are some hair tutorials on youtube. I'll have to look at them later on. The texture I used in the images is a recolored image from a product. I wanted to see what it would look like, which is why I cheaped out at first. So I will have to learn how to do it before I release the product to the masses. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out. This hair texture has ripples. I need to decide what would look best with my hair. Like the hair itself, the basic textures will be mix and match. I might even release different color packs like everyone else.

I honestly don't know how well my toon hair will look with transparency. I'll have to try it and see before I release it and include it if it looks good enough.

As long as the strand-direction is mapped top-to-bottom, it should be fine.

it is, no worries. Each strand and piece is like a grid, which is one reason the hair looks so good :)
