Heads up about a potential PayPal issue (issue is in their system, not Daz's fault)

dragotxdragotx Posts: 1,140

First thing, I've already opened a ticket with Daz support to get the order redone, this is just a heads up to let people know they may need to check their transactions.  I woke up this morning to an email from PayPal that they had reviewed a recent transaction and cancelled it and fully refunded my purchase.  The transaction was my most recent one made here, from the flash sale that was going on yesterday, and as such it was obviously a completely normal and authorized transaction.  I contacted PayPal and all they would tell me was their automated system didn't like something about the transaction, it could have been any of a thousand different causes.  I want to reiterate that this is an issue on Paypal's side rather than something Daz did, even according to the PayPal rep.  Hopefully it's just a one-off issue and I'm the only one it affected, but depending on what was going on/triggered it, it could potentially affect multiple people.

I just used PayPal on a site I have never used before and the transaction went through normally, no problems.

  • I use PayPal all the time here with no issues.

Yeah, hopefully it was just a one off glitch on PayPal's end, I just wanted to make sure and let both customers and Daz knowto keep an eye out.  I work IT for a company that sells online, and I know how much even a single chargeback can hurt, if it's happeneing with multiple orders it can be seriously painful.

"This transaction is currently pending compliance review. Please do not try to send the payment again until you hear from PayPal. If the compliance team has any questions for you regarding the payment, the team will reach out to you via email. Thank you in advance for your patience with this matter."

Never had this happen before!  angry

Nothing's happening with this either.  Placed this order this AM and now it's past 1 PM in the afternoon.  Still sitting there!

  • I've had this happen to me a couple of times.  Here is one of my threads:  https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/64864/paypal-puts-temorary-hold-on-payment-to-daz#latest

    Cheers

That's interesting, I didn't get that with mine. All I got was an email that they had refunded the transaction. According to the rep I talked to it was an automated system, and he couldn't tell what had triggered it. Working on the fix with Daz support (great service, as usual) I noticed that the Passover from payment authorization on PayPal back to Daz to complete the transaction didn't want to work, at all, so I'm betting the two are having some kind of communication issue. It could also be something completely unrelated, but that's what I'm seeing. Don't think I'll be using PayPal for a while though

I've had it happen to me once when I bought a model of a machine gun and paid via Paypal - it took about a day to clear. Never happened before or since.

The more I think about it, I wonder if the PayPal issue had something to do with the Columbus Day weekend in the U.S.?

I purchased something from the DAZ Shop this morning, and I had no issues.  And I live in Canada, and it is also a holiday weekend for me (Thanksgiving, to be exact).

I've just had my paypal payment from earlier today reversed. So this is still ongoing. I'll get in touch with Daz Customer Support and find out what to do now. I've never had this happen with Paypal before.

  • Just had this happen to me now.  Means I can't use the gift card I purchased.  How did the rest of you guys pay?  Paypal credit? Another credit card account using PayPal as the middleman?  I used my own checking account and PayPal has still put a hold on my purchase.  I don't understand.  Also, I got the following message from PayPal in my email:

Your payment to DAZ Productions Inc is pending

We’ve placed a temporary pending status on this transaction.

To comply with government regulations, PayPal is required to review certain transactions. The payment you sent is currently being reviewed and we will complete this process within 72 hours. This review only involves this transaction and does not affect the use of your PayPal account.

    Sincerely,
    PayPal

Get in touch with customer service at Daz @SiennaBlue. They did a work around for me and sorted it very efficiently.

  • Thank you, Mollytabby.  I'll contact them if the situation hasn't resolved itself by the time I get online tomorrow.  I'm really glad you were able to get your problem worked out. yes  smiley

I just got in a big fight with PayPal. Their compliance team blocked my payment, reversed it, and refused to process it although I insisted I authorized it. I had ordered a gift card with 15% off and I’m hoping CS will honor that. I have no idea why they did that. This is a huge pain when you think an order has gone through and PayPal, on a whim, decides not to let you make it! I think we all need to contact the Better Business Bureau!

They ended up cancelling mine, as well.  I'd really like to know what's going on.

This has made me very hesitant to use PayPal anymore, especially on sites like Rendo and CGBytes, with their warnings about going through PayPal for transaction disputes. I don't want to have to worry about losing my account there because PayPal has decided to get a bug up their backside for some reason.

I’ve never heard of a financial institution refusing to make a payment after you contact them and insist that you authorize it. What gives them the right to randomly choose what you can and cannot pay for? As a merchant myself, I may have to refuse PayPal payments and use another form of payment if this is their policy that they can just decide to reverse payments for no reason.

  • I just used paypal today and had no problems. But I used my paypal balance. Are you guys using a balance in your paypal accounts or is it connected to a credit card or checking account? That may be the thing that is causing problems. Or maybe it's the dollar amount of the purchases? Or as much as I hate to suggest this, perhaps it's your location and maybe paypal has had some policy change, that they haven't informed their customers about.

There was an update    on 2nd October

    Our Legal Agreements are changing.

    Dear xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

We’re making some changes to our Legal Agreements, the documents that govern our relationship with you, so that we can continue to make PayPal even more secure, quick and easy to use. We’ve put details of the changes on our Policy Updates page – you can also find the page on the PayPal website, by clicking ‘Legal’ at the bottom of the page and then selecting ‘Policy Updates’.

What do I have to do?

Take a look at our Policy Updates page to check you’re happy with the changes. If you are, you don’t need to do anything as these changes will automatically apply to you. If you don’t want to accept the changes you can follow the steps we’ve set out on our Policy Updates page.

Strangely enough  that bottom blue bar does work as a hyperlink straight to PayPal and the detail of the update, but of course will be the UK version.

I live in the U.S., was making a payment under $100, part PayPal balance, part directly from my bank account. There is no logical reason and the PayPal reps could not give me a reason, just said it’s their policy, the compliance division can deny any payment without giving a reason even if the payer insists they want to pay it, it’s crazy!

That's interesting, I'm in the US and the most recent policy update I see is going into effect November 7 of this year. And that's for charging a fee on debit card withdrawls. Maybe something has changed for different areas.

    Of course this:

    Payment review

When PayPal identifies a potentially high-risk transaction, we review the transaction more closely before allowing it to proceed.  When this happens, PayPal will place a hold on the transaction and notify the seller to delay shipping of the item.  As a buyer, this may delay your receipt of the item you purchased.  If we clear the transaction, we will notify the seller and direct them to ship the item.  If we don’t clear the transaction, we will cancel it and return the funds to you.

is right there in the user agreement.

Paypal is probably trying to prevent money laundrying and other kinds of illegal transfers. They are probably under pressure from the government to automate indenfication of suspious transactions that might be money laundering or transfers to fund things like terroism. I can see where using paypal to buy a gift card could be used to hide an illegal money transfer, but a gift card at DAZ?  Come on.

This is what happens when people try to write alogrithms to identify bad actors. The mistake ratio is high.

Meanwhile the people who are laundering millions of dollars through Caribbean shell companies are never touched.

I've been wondering if it was something like this, one of the characters I got was named poppy, which is a name for a type of plant that can be used in drug manufacturing.  And another product was the Rapture poses, again, something that could be related to drug use.  I was wondering if maybe the combination tripped their automatic systems.  But what was wierd is the payment was approved initially and only denied after the fact.  The rep did say it was one of their automatic security scans that triggered, but wouldn't tell me what triggered it.

  • Happened to me as well. The order is now showing as cancelled. I have opened a ticket with DAZ. My order contained the Rapture poses as well, interesting!

Rapture could also be connected to financing so-claimed "religious" terrorism of all flavours.

My cancelled Paypal order contained the Rapture Poses as well.

  • This happened to me a week ago Thursday. I contacted Daz because from that day until Sunday, I was unable to make *any* purchases at Daz using my Paypal balance (on Monday I finally caved and tried a credit card and that worked). What was interesting was that I had set to pay with my Paypal balance, but when I contacted Daz they told me the issue was definitely something Paypal did, but to Daz, it looked like I was trying to pay by e-check instead of my current balance (it definitely was by my current balance at Paypal).

So I'm curious-- those with held and cancelled transactions-- were you trying to pay with a Paypal balance, e-check, credit card? Wondering if there's something in their system that marks Paypal balance transactions incorrectly maybe?
