[Freebie] Collection Nature: vegetation, plants, ground, textures, landscape, 3D scans
Hi and wellcome to my [Freebie] Collection Nature thread
This thread is all about nature themed freebie 2D/3D asset collections for various:
vegetation, plants, flowers, grass, bushes, trees, sticks, rocks, ground, landscapes, textures, 3D scans
Foreword
If you want to create outdoor renders of nature settings like grass land and forest you would need alot of different 3D assets.
Here I've gathered up some freebie recources covering this theme. Because I was in search of such items lately, I hope you like them and find something useful.
It is just amazing how much well made freebies you can get from talented people that share their work with us. I especialy like those 3D scans with a few of those you could create a realistic environment.
This should give you a good starting point to get various types of vegetation and diversity into your nature landscape rendrings.
Its up to you how you use them, I plan to use Blender to prepare some assets to convert and import them into Daz Studio. Maybe I will add a video how to do that in future.
Next I will multiply those assests with instancing and distribute them on a landscape surface with a script like UltraScatter Advanced Instancing for Daz Studio.
I hope that the freebie links do not violate the forum terms of use. The links will open a new browser tab, the preview pictures are scaled down to 440 pixels in width. Most times you click the preview picture to get to the download page. If those items are no longer free or not available anymore that is beyond my influence. If you want to use some of those freebies in your projects its always a good advice to keep an eye on the licensing.
Index Free Resources:
By clicking on a index entry here your browser will jump to the posts below. I'v added this index for easy navigation. With all the preview images this is a very long list to scroll though, so in case you got lost while scrolling just press the "Pos1" or "Home" key on your keyboard to jump back to this opening post, this should work in all browsers at least it works in Firefox.
Blend Swap
Here you can download Blender project files (.blend) those showcase technics and methods you can use in Blender. If you are familiar with Blender you can also extract those meshes to use them how you like.
Sketchfab 3D models collections
These include the 3D scans, the technic is called Photogrammetry - Wikipedia. Realy exiting stuff I wasn't aware of till lately.

For to download the Blend Swap freebies you need an account and you get a limit of (currently) 20 downloads per month. No one likes such restrictions but if you read the text below you should understand it. With your account you can create collections and see your monthly downloads left, just create a collection and come back a month later and choose well what to download next.

Most trees already got leaves but what if you need them seperate? The season is changing and you may want to render autumn leaves. There are many commercial leave packs in a wide price range but here I have found a free alternative. There are many pictures of leaves of all kinds to find with a google search most of them are already cut out with transparent backround.
Just add those textures to a primitive plane and use the Alpha Mask from these PNGs for the transparency in the shader settings. Then maybe subdivide the plane mesh a few times in your 3D moddeling application and bend parts of it in some degree to get a not too flat 3D look. You could even generate some extra shader textures like speculatity, bump, displacement, normal, what ever is needed with some extra tools. I just realized that if you had acces to a flat bed scanner you could scan in some samples from both sides.

In case you don't know the first place for me to search for freebies is ShareCG.com. They have a huge section of Poser and DazStudio compatible stuff so you don't have to convert anything if that is your target app.
Its also good for to find free texture packs. There is a huge textures pack list available. I'm just posting the first or some random examples out of the series.
Those packs are made by Yughues aka Nobiax if you click on the link you get to his gallery and you see he's also doing Photogrammetry. Its as always if you like the free stuff support the artist so there will potentially be more free stuff released.

Excellent thread! BTW, if you are interested in adding another source of plants, XFrog also has a collection of free 3D samples available on their site, here:
http://xfrog.com/category/samples.html
You do need to register, but the plants come in a variety of formats, including wavefront .obj's.
I'm glad you like it. Shure why not, I will add some of the XFrog samples.
I don't want to treat some site preferentially and its always good to have a wide variety choices. This thread is all about virtual bio diversity and against mono culture LOL.
Since I have understand how to create anchor points in this forum for easy naviagation and have sort of categorized the links, it should be easy to find what you may search for without too much scrolling. I may continue to change the categories and anchorpoints slightly. You should know what formats the freebies have for example Blend Swap only provides *.blend files for Bender others sources provide .obj or .fbx and thats the prefered universal format we can import in our 3D apps. I'v avoided to post 'Autodesk' only freebie formats like .3ds and .max since those are not common to use for most of us and not easy convert.
@ All
Feel free to post suggestions what to include in the list, as long as it is a freebie and fits in the theme.

This isn't really a complaint, but more of an observation. Afterall, one should never look a gift horse in the mouth, as they say. However, this is something that seems common to both free and for purchase tree models: they all seem to be based upon what I would call "open-grown" specimens. In other words, tree specimens as they might appear growing in a park or on someone's lawn. Such trees, free from neighboring competition, have a tendency to grow full crowns with branches relatively low to the ground. Forest trees, on the other hand, often assume a very different form owing to competition for light with the surrounding trees. As a consequence, they tend to have smaller crowns nearer to the top, with a long, largely branch-free bole. I understand why most models have the open-grown form - they are the ones in real life that are easiest to find and examine, and may be what most folks are accustomed to seeing. If you want to create a forest scene, many of the examples available are technically out of place unless you can "remove" lower branches and/or move them up closer to the top. Again, just an observation.
