NVIDIA PhysX is going open source, now true physics become possible for dazstudio like iray

NVIDIA PhysX, the most popular physics simulation engine on the planet, is going open source. We’re doing this because physics simulation — long key to immersive games and entertainment — turns out to be more important than we ever thought. https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2018/12/03/physx-high-fidelity-open-source/ Now true physics become possible for dazstudio (softbody, clothes, hair...) like the great iray for rendering.

    Cool!

Unfortunately, open source physics engines (like Bullet) have been available for quite a while.  It's not a question of availability.  It's getting DAZ to implement a full physics engine's features into DAZ Studio.

They made a start with dForce.  But we will have to wait and see if they ever give us more than clothes and a few hair styles that can be physics simulated....

I cant see Daz Studio ever having the kind of physics and simulation tools that are seen in other software, not while Daz continue with their current model of Daz Studio being free and content sales generating their revenue. At least not to the same or a comparable level as similar physics engines and simulators seen in programs like Maya.

The kind of development investment that would be required to achieve that would be huge. Having those functions inside Daz Studio will not translate to as much content sales as spending an equal amount of time and money on improving their content platform (i.e improvements to genesis etc) would.

Having dForce does not mean we will see the rest of it; of all the types of physics/dynamics simulators around, a cloth simulator makes the most sense to be inside Daz Studio, which is probably why it came as part of Daz Studio.

I think it is far more likely we may end up seeing other physics engines as plug-ins and sold in the store. Like Fluidos. Or perhaps they will continue to improve compatibility with other mainstream 3d software and/or formats and give us easier ways of exporting a fully functional Daz character out of Daz Studio.

This is, of course, all speculation. But if i was a betting man, i would put money on not seeing any further physics features come as part of Daz Studio and available to all for free.

In DAZ Studio? No thanks. The last thing that the entire DAZ community needs is yet another feature locked into Nvidia's hardware products (or any individual company's hardware, for that matter). Not that I have any particular axe to grind when it comes to Nvidia. I have or have used many of their products over the years. I just don't like restricted options.

Besides that, I have no idea which physics engine DAZ is using in Studio for DForce, but I suspect any problems or limitations that DForce has are probably less to do with the engine than they do with the implementation. Its a relatively new addition, and no small one, and may simply need more time to mature.

well, for one NVIDIA GPUs are pretty much the ideal GPU for rendering stuff. and secondly i believe PhysX can run on AMD GPUs as well.

So once again DAZ3D should go ahead and do their own thing completly ignoring all the "standards" and "common formats" other companies are working with?

DAZ3D made the choice to support Nvidia when they adapted Iray.

DAZ3D customers now have purchased Nvidia graphic cards.

Some spent more and some spent less money.

But the important point is: A choice was made and now they are supposed to stick with it.

It should be expected from DAZ3D to keep supporting Nvidia technology.

So yes, hopefully we can see more of Nvidia open source software like PhysX.

Actually, now that PhysX is open source, AMD has full access to the code as well, and anyone can get it to run on AMD if they wanted. That is what being open source is about.

Probably means a lot of the code will be obsoleted by the new tech used in nVidia's new cards too.

So, for those who say DAZ shouldn't stick with NVIDIA only, what are the alternatives? Obviously, there must be something better.

Well DAZ should immediately port physX to DAZ Studio and make it openCL compliant if it isn't already! Maybe if DAZ (& we) Unity will now open source their cross platform ports I think they must of done for physX making it an easy job for DAZ to integrate in DAZ Studio. Maybe a Cararra update is now reasonably feasible thing to consider too.
