OT: Star Trek Discovery season 2

So we are three weeks in... who is watching?

I have Mixed feelings as on the one hand I am excited  the show is
back on but I think they might have too many threads going on at one time.

Good to see them introduce the mysterious star fleet "Section 31" to this series
I am totally not pleased  with the casting of young Lt spock.
Still I am an unrepentant sci fi nerd who will be in for the duration

..Thoughts???

  • Wait, that hasn't been cancelled? The showrunners weren't hunted down, tarred and feathered and run out of this universe on a rail after the first season? What has fandom come to?

I was watching it last night and the thing that caught my eye was how the makeup for the klingons seemed to have gotten really bad from the previous season. It looks so fake and "put on" last night and they could hardly talk with their mouth prosthetics.

overall though, it is still a fun series, I look forward to it.

I found the first two episodes of Season 2 very enjoyable. The third one, woof. The Klingon portions are painful to watch, the make-up is just so horrible. My opinion isn’t about hair or about the redesign. It’s about the fact the prosthetics are so heavy and that they don’t allow the actors to do their job and emote. They can barely recite their dialogue, and when they are speaking Klingon it’s even worse. The designers who created this would have harshly critqued any of their contestants on Face-Off for showing them something this stiff and immobile when they were judges. They should have used a different actor as Voq and kept to lighter appliances that would the actors to do their jobs and still disguise the plot twist that Voq became Ash. I believe that was the main driver for such a heavy Klingon redesign. I've seen a lot of people bring up past Star Trek make-ups as being just as bad. The usual justification for all the changes Discovery has made is how much modern materials and techniques have improved and ‘you can’t have things like they were 50 years ago’. You can’t have it both ways. If Discovery is supposed to be better technically realized than past series, then it should be across all areas.

From all that I have read, this series is derived from the so called
"kelvin timeline" version of the Star trek universe
from the JJ Abrams films in which  planet Vulcan is eventully destroyed
By the  mad  time traveling Romulan  Nero who Destroyed the USS
    Kelvin Killing kirks Father.

In that timeline we see the same redesign of the klingons
althoug these  klingons seem to have less lower face prosthetics however
and could emote much better than the Discovery versions IMHO.

One thing that hinted to me that our universe's  Capt Lorca is not Dead
is when Pike finds one of the fortunes from his fortune cookies on the floor.
it crytically read "not every cage is a prison"

To me it seems unlikely that this would have been missed as federation security
would have certainly scoured his ready room/living quarters for any
evidence of  "other universe" objects, devices etc to keep that other universes existence top secret.

I figured the 'Not every cage is a prison' line was an easter egg reference to the original TOS pilot "The Cage" that featured Pike as captain of the Enterprise.

I didn't see the episode but that would just about have to be an easter egg reference to the original TOS pilot. If STD is 10 years before TOS then Pike is just about due to visit Talos IV
