Open Source Skin Textures?

Maybe an odd question, but I was wondering where one can find not just free skin textures, but skin textures that can be freely redistribtuted and altered like open source. I see free skin textures all over the place, but they usually stilpulate that they cannot be redistributed for free or have some other restriction. I would like to be able to alter a skin and redistribute that skin as part of a freebie itself.

Any generation would do, but Genesis 2 and 3 (or 8 since they are same UV) would be great.

I found this one, which still has a limitation against selling something made from it, but that is not my goal anyway. (Odd though that they call it a "merchant" resource.)

Are there others like this?

I can't comment regarding free textures, but the restrictions for the sharecg item are only two things: not to sell the MR as a MR and not to make another MR from it. They also state "Anyway you can use it by it self as well or midificated one is your choice, you can use it to create your marketplace characters or any free stuff items characters as well."

  • Yeah, it only has those two restrictions, which is nice. I misread that one line.

I am hoping to find some other sets like this.

The issues are exactly the same as finding people who will let you use their nude bodies in commercial and non commercial work hence the rarity. devil

while there is no shortage of sites with naked skin and many certainly look at them for reference and research  laugh you could not actually grab images without some sort of signed release from the subject some texture artists resort to photographing their own skins!

There are however many sites you can buy skins for commercial purposes from, including DAZ PA’s  its making redistributeable  freebie models with real skins  that’s just about impossible as you have found.

  • Honestly there is no shortage of people who actually do that, as there are many resources for producing textures, many of which require numerous nude photos of that person. Its no different than people who pose for stock photos of any kind, just some people will do them nude. Believe me, there are plenty of people willing to take their clothes off in front of a camera for a price and not care what the photos are used for. The restrictions made on these textures tend to come from the artist making the texture rather than the original photo source of those textures. If the original photo restricted nudity, the nude Daz texture would not exist in the first place. There are plenty of free skins out there, many of which contain a bit of nudity, they just are not open source. This lack of open source is not limited to skin, there are restrictions on just about all free content, whether it is human skin or a spaceship, they often have restrictons to how they are shared and used. There are very few items for Daz Studio that are open source period.

Aside from that, many skins are hand texture painted without a photo source, bypassing any model consent issue entirely. Even an anime skin would be fine by me. It just comes down to who is willing to share them as an open source. I have shared some presets that use textures created by Facegen that I altered, and I placed no restrictions on them. (To be clear, Facegen's terms allow for this.) So I am not begging for something I would never do myself. But it would be nice if there were a few other options out there to work with as I do not have a program for painting skins from scratch.

Can't say I'm a fan of the MS, but they are free and it is certainly possible to fix the mirroring, symmetry, mirror-symmetry and repetition of details visible on all of the textures.

Thanks. They all say " This is licensed for commercial or non-commercial use. ", so that means they are ok for this purpose since it would be non-commercial?

What do you mean by "MS"? I only think Microsoft when I see that.

Some of the packages come with Documents that you would have to read to get what is being requested of the user.

"Thank you for downloading the M3/V3 Base for M3/V3 set by  Ecstasy. This is a Base character textures set based on Daz's V3 Templates.
    .

1.The set is for Experinced user of graphic apps and poser.
and its intended use is for a quick and easy base to work off of to create your very own M3/V3 texture set to sell or make as a freebie.

2.I encourage you to alter and play with in any paint program of your choice.
And anything derived from the sets may be sold or given away as long as they are not in original form and/or to create another base for free or bond.

3.All I ask is that you drop me some credit as the base creator, if not , I wont hunt you down to chop your head off, hey Sh!t happens;-)
    Its ok.
Good luck & enjoy your purchase .Alter the texture set and let me know how much the purchase  brings to you.

Limmited commercial restrictions apply after purchase. Meaning Line 2."

  • I didn't look at the V3 one, none of the others I downloaded had a readme like that. The others say something like this:

"Thank you to MalicetheCat for the conversions and you for downloading V4 conversions skin texts for your public, private or what ever job you need to accomplish or any Idea of creation you need a base for.
Hope you enjoy these you can sale or give away any derived creation from these sets without giving credit but its always appreciated when you do give credit. And again Thank you for downloading!"

It says derived creations, which makes sense because I wouldn't be just reupload them without modifying them anyway. Some of the downloads have no readme at all! Really strange.

However, I don't think I will be using the Ecstasy skins, they have not aged very well. The search continues.

Hmmm, lol, not sure what I was thinking; I'll take a look tomorrow and see if makes sense; the rest does though, a lot of repetition etc.
