Apply Makeup Selectively?

asdf123asdf123 Posts: 167

I've applied a fully body mat to my character. Now I'd like to use the eye makeup from a different character. Unfortunately, when I apply the makeup, it seems to apply the source character's skin tone to the face, as well. I've tried selectively applying the makeups, via CTRL, with eye(s) selected, but that doesn't seem to work. Is there a way to use makeup from one character on another, selectively?

Most makeup options provided with characters actually simply apply an alternate face texture for that character which includes the corresponding makeup, so they can't be used on another character texture.

The exception will be makeup using the Layered Image Editor (LIE) or a geoshell.

To do what you want to do, I would try this:

I would look for the textures of the character which have the make-up I want to apply. In Photoshop, I would blend the texture with the make-up with the texture without the make-up of this character, as layers, in difference mode. That would extract the make-up. I would make a fusion mask, and then I would blend the modified layer with the texture of the character on which I want to apply the make-up, in normal mode. Finally, I would return to Daz Studio and use this texture.

Also those using Diffuse Overlay in Iray - though people complain about that as it doesn't show in Texture Sahded mode, and of course the 3delight versions have to use LIE anyway.

Which character are you wanting to use the makeup from? Is it a character that has Diffuse Overlay Makeup, L.I.E. Makeup, or is it makeup that's baked into the character's face textures?

  • You may be able to find a mask for the Diffuse Overlay layer that has zero (black color) for all the facial areas except for the eyes, lips, and maybe even the cheeks. Or you can manufacture one using Diffuse Overlays for makeup (notably found in many of the mainline Base figures for Genesis 8).

What you want in "Diffuse Overlay Weight" is a grayscale JPG, with White color being what part of the Diffuse Overlay Color is used for the overlay... and Black colors being excluded.

I've got a billion things to do, and I'm sticking to nudes in safely nude sites since a previous image was rejected here, but that should be enough to figure out how to decompose the makeups that you want.

I don't have her, so I don't know what type of makeup she uses. But what can you can try, if you have a character that uses Diffuse Overlay makeup that applies without changing the face texture (like Aiko 8), is apply that character's makeup to your figure then in the Surfaces Tab where it says Diffuse Overlay Color change that Diffuse Overlay Color map to the map that has the makeup that you want to use. Also, be sure and turn Diffuse Overlay Squared On:

So if you have Aiko 8 (or another character that uses Diffuse Overlay Makeup that doesn't change the underlying face texture), apply one of her makeups (it won't show up in the preview screen unless you're using the Iray Preview Draw Setting), then go to the Surfaces Tab >> Face and click on the Map in the Diffuse Overlay Color slot, select "Browse" and navigate to the folder that has the makeup you want to use. Select the map that has the makeup you want to use and that should apply it to the Diffuse Overlay Color spot. Makes sure you also click "On" for Diffuse Overlay Weight Squared as that can help blend the map better with the face skin.

This technique doesn't work on all makeup but it does work quite a few times that I've tried it. :)

I have Aiko 8, and I'm viewing my character in Wireframe Texture Shaded, and I selected one of Aiko's makeup presets from the Smart Content folder. The makeup DOES appear in the viewport.

then go to the Surfaces Tab >> Face

Do you mean Surfaces >> Editor >> Face?

and click on the Map in the Diffuse Overlay Color slot

For me, the Diffuse Overlay Color setting is hidden unless I first set Diffuse Overlay Weight to a non-zero value. Incidentally, Diffuse Overlay Weight becomes hidden once I apply makeup, so I can only access it while Aiko has no makeup on.

select "Browse" and navigate to the folder that has the makeup you want to use. Select the map that has the makeup you want to use and that should apply it to the Diffuse Overlay Color spot. It doesn't work for me, and I'm using Aiko 8.

Are you sure you're using Aiko 8? https://www.daz3d.com/aiko-8

If so, are you using Iray mats? It's the Iray mats that have the Diffuse Overlay. Smart Content >> Materials >> Iray >> Feminine >> Aiko 8 >> Makeup

Okay, so it looks like I need to use the Makeup preset that says "MDL" in the icon, not "RSL". And the MDL presets show up in the Iray folder, but not the Feminine folder where I would expect them to be.

Sometimes I wonder if I've bought into the modeling equivalent of Sibelius.

Do I want the preset that says RSL, or MDL?

Iray is MDL. 3DL is RSL.
