The more I think about it, the more I read, the more I think the question for me is "To Spend or not Spend on G9". It sounds like every new generation leaves some users behind. Maybe thier system isn't ready for the new version, or (in my case) the new version isn't appealling enought to update or manage my library for the new generation. So, to answer the topic question: Yes, I plan to keep adding to my G8 based library.
<off topic> Clearly, with all the converters available in the store, there is money to be made making things cross compatable. I wonder if there is enough money to be made to add figure emulation to a future verion of Daz Studio e.g. load one of those cool G2 figures I keep looking at and not buying, then add dForce clothes and your favorite new G9 expression and let Studio do all the corrections/conversions in the background.. one can dream.
I really don't understand the question, or even the point of asking the question. Are you going to stop using your G8 and G8.1 figures? Me? No. Heck, I still use old V4 (and even some Aiko3) figures when they server the purpose I have in mind.
I have a ton of G8 content, and a lot of characters that I use frequently. I will still be looking at some G8 extras, but I won't be buying any more G8 characters, most likely. I've been finding a lot of the latest releases kind of same old same old and have been dialing back my figure purchases already.
I hope there will be a simple way to migrate the majority of G8 content that I already have to the new unimesh G9 (morphs, clothing, hair, poses and textures)... but have doubts about the textures making an easy transition from G8 to G9, since the new UDIM layouts look VERY different.
Vendors are probably going to have a hard time releasing character products that support G8 / G9 simultaneously in one product.
Maybe we'll see a few Published Artists release G9 character products with both a male and female version of the same character in one product. It would be super cool to see that... like siblings, and everything in between... dial up more female or male, and then mod the texture to either gender expression as required by the character narrative.
The new mesh appears to have a ton of texturing and rigging improvements in the face for close-up renders, and the separation of mouth bag and eyes is going to make the workflow of morphing in external programs much better.
All the improvements that the new model brings to facial expressions, eyes, eyelashes and eyebrows are super welcome, and are big enough improvements for me to *really* want to put in the time to port my customized / stylized characters for G8 to G9.
It will take a while for vendors to release all the G9 products that I'm going to need to stylize G9 far enough from the "default look" of Victoria... need elements from Kanade, Sakura, Aiko and The Girl.
I'm also very curious about how the workflow is going to be with getting male characters on the same basemesh without interference of female surface anatomy..
I have no complaints but also no interest in spending a significant amount of money I don't have on something I know very little about
I do have to wonder what the hell the people running this company are thinking marketing wise making a lot of their current content redundent in the future and telling their customers so

I don't really understand this complaint. I as a customer value that Daz finally tries to communicate with us, and heck, I'd like to know even more about what Daz is doing. One of the Daz competitiors even shows a roadmap at the start of the year, and still somehow manage to survive. I for one would like to see similar with Daz. Then nobody could complain how they just spent $1000 on a previous generation week before new one is released
For me, the only thing I will not buy are the expressions. You can translate poses, you can convert morphs but expressions? Ha, if G8.1 was any indication,it is money to the sink.

I have already seen posts by people expressing reluctance to invest anymore in the old 8.1 figures released today

It's the forum mods who act as the bridge of communication. Back to the topic, not buying any more G8 or G8.1 figures, but if they are free? Yes, please.

Yes, I've seen those also, but how is that a bad thing? I mean, now that people are aware that new figure is coming, they can make their purchase decision knowing that and there's no bad feelings afterwards for anybody when G9 is released. I do understand that for PAs this transition period could be troublesome, but from a customer's perspective, I think this is fair thing to do to inform us about incoming changes, so we can make educated decisions. Maybe Daz marketing finally realized that happy customer is paying customer, and they rather lose little money than customers.
The price tag alone for Victoria 9 makes it a huge pass. Is DAZ serious with their pricings ??
Free is too expensive? Victoria 9 is not the base, Genesis 9 is and that will still be free.
He complained that Victoria 9 is too expensive and not Genesis 9.
And Victoria 9 isn't free, for sure.
But if Victoria 9 is too expensive for the majority will DAZ soon see, once they released her.
I have no special opionon about that.
Exactly ! I am talking about Victoria 9 not Genesis 9..... The price tag of Victoria 9 is clearly an indicator on how much Genesis 9 figures will cost once the free base model is available.
30$ just for Victoria 9 ?!? What are DAZ management team smoking ? What about that so called bundle....1 bikini and 1 asset of hair for 80$ ?!?! GTFO !

Nothing has been said about what is included in the bundle yet, the hair and the bikini are just the bonus items given to ones that preorder the bundle
When G8 came out I transitioned over slowly as items I needed or (more likely) wanted were sold. I mostly bought G3 stuff at first, but did pick up a few G8 characters and clothing items as time went by. Probably after about a year I was mostly buying G8. By now, my library is probably about 50%/30%/10% G8 (both versions)/G3/G2 and lower.
I regularly buy G3 clothing when it's on sale, and still pick up G3 characters every once in a while if they have something I can use, like a good texture. It helps that the G3 textures and clothing generally work fine with G8/8.1. In my renders I use a mix of G3 and G8, picking the figures and items that I need from that wide pool.
I am picking up V9 and figure that I will probably have a similar approach - mainly using G3/8/8.1 and slowly moving toward G9. Though the cross compatibility between 9 and 8/8.1 will likely matter more with this switch.
Over the past couple of years, my buying pattern has changed, and I tend not to buy new stuff (unless it's DAZ+, or fills a particular immediate need, or Stonemason made it ). I probably spend nearly the same as before, but use sales to get more for the mnoney.

I'm definitely one of those people...speaking only for myself, it's not that I think 8.1 is old, bad, inferior etc. I am figure agnostic. For me, I'm going to hold off on investing in G8 / 8.1 until G9 / V9 is released. Sooner or later, G8 is going to go on discount, at which point I'll be buying heavily. That's all I'm saying. I think G8.1 is fantastic, and I'm looking to stock up...once those sales start!
Just one thought here. Most Daz Official shapes like Victoria, etc, are priced generally above the average PA's character. And the HD add on is generally the price of a new character. (A lot of PAs btw include the HD in their character along with a ton more options, which puts a lot of value there, IMHO). At any rate, the full price of general 8.1 OFFICIAL Characters is $45 and HD add on is $40 ish, tho with PC discount you'd probably get it at 30-50 off, so maybe, 20-25 for teh char, 20-18 for HD,
Vic 9 is 60 full price and that's with the HD, (full for 8.1 +HD is 85.). Currently, the presale is a very good deal.

As so many orhers have said, probably wait until free G9. Will the things you mentioned work?
Be interesting to see.
Meantime-- anyone have idea when DS 4.2XX beta with G9 might be out?
Don't think my questions will have an answer until can try G9. ; )
While I wait, probably buy anything that suits my tastes. Lot of good stuff from previous generations.
To me, G8 is part of my catalog and I will continue to acquire items I like. 8.1 was never part of that. I haven't bought and have no plans to buy any figures from that subset.
Well I know I will be buying some more MetaMixer heads for 8.1 and also the new Faux2D MetaMixer PLUS. Probably a few chaaracters that I like, but no more than a half dozen of them.
Clothing & hair I'll get fashion styles I don't have regardless of the generation.
That's the plan. A hyperinflated currency doesn't rise against others; it falls. And yet...
I'd like for Daz to review their philosophy for male clothing before Michael 9 hits the store, because---generally speaking---Daz Originals male clothing was much more realistic 5 years ago than it is today.
I was dressing a male character, and I went through Luthbel, Mada, IHKang, & Genesis 3 and 8 Male Pro Bundles. The male clothes in the Genesis 3 Pro Bundles were exponentially better looking and better fitting (more realistic) than what was available in the male 8 Pro Bundles---even before the advent of dForce, with a few notable exceptions made by Mada, as well as, Alt Style Outfit.
Honestly if I can't use any of my old g8f characters I have bought over the years on g9f, like converting them, g9f will be another pass like g8.1. Plus, why i also skipped g8.1f was no skin builder. Skin builder was a BIG seller for me for g8f and im hoping zevo makes one for g9f which I am hearing he MAYBE but its going to take awhile. I'm more than likely going to be on g8f for awhile til loads of content come out for g9f and as everyone is saying, its going to be months if not years before we get a library size of g9f content as big as g8f.
G8 was a huge improvement over G7 because it offered the same high level of detail without the massive resource consumption.
G8 was also incredibly useful because artists went insane making content for it and it probably has more content than any figure DAZ has ever produced aside from maybe V4.
G9 is twice the price of any figure DAZ has ever released, has zero content, is untested, and it's highly unlikely to add more value to your workflow unless you're highly skilled and making incredibly true to life renders.
G9 looks like a huge skip for at least a year. Seems like it will only be worth getting if the content support for it matches G8, which will probably still be getting even more content for years to come. Even then, I doubt I'll ever use G9 unless an artist makes a piece of content for it that is a must have perfect addition to a render I'm doing.
Frankly, I'm kind of bothered by all the posts that are saying "it looks great I'm going to buy it". This is telling DAZ to create new figures based on how they look and not what value they bring to your workflow.

I'm not spending $42 USD for one character.

You don't have to. She comes with a bikini

Oh, that's an easy one - https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/metahuman ; The bar has been moved.
