Humble Bundle currently has a promotion for both Painter and Paintshop Pro plus various brushes, all for about $31
I am also a fan of Rebelle; I bought it on sale. I have been using Flame Painter (same company) for several years. As I said, I like to experiment
Which version? AFAIR they offered keys to users of older versions because the activation server for these was shut down, or something.
Besides, I don't think it's legal to disable a license so you can't use the program anymore, at least not for the OS versions it was originally purchased for.
Sometimes I hate software subscriptions. My MS office 365 subscription just expired so I am thinking of looking into something else for my office needs.
Creative Suite 5
That Nanopixel Technology is very cool.
"No more raster graphics limitations! Macro-zoom into the canvas in real-time to see infinite features of the painting. Export 16x larger artworks with sharp details, or rescale your old painting from A4 to A0 and print it with a detail never seen before. "
Both version are indeed $14.29 CAD
Libre Office is good https://www.libreoffice.org/
There are cheap older MS Office Pro suites available sometimes, I've seen the 2019 version on USB stick for $10. I bought a Win 10 Pro / Office Pro 2019 combo a while ago for $30. Both offers were from Nierle, one of the biggest hardware online sellers in Germany, so I presume they're legal.
Maybe they have changed their mind (probably because of a lot of protests), or realized it wasn't legal. In any case they have instructions for installing Creative Suite 5 here:
https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/install-creative-suite-5.html
It also seems to be compatible with Windows 10 if you use the inctructions here:

No longer matters because 1) I no longer have the disks to install the software they were destroyed in an apartment fire along with everything else I owned and 2) the way they respondeed to me when I asked about my License being deactivated
Well as far as I can read, if you have an account there you can actually download the software if you don't have the disks, and you should also be able to find your serial number there.
The one that told you about the deactivated license could have been an ignorant and maybe nasty supporter.
While I still use Photoshop for a lot of "standard" stuff, there are certain things I like to use Affinity Photo for because it's more fun for certain tasks (e.g. halftoning and simulating images in printed media), and Affinity also boots up much quicker for little tasks.
The one thing I think Photoshop has the edge over everyone else is their algorithm for calculating applying smooth gradients... it's often miniscule, but Photoshop still has a slight edge - the rest (for me) is basically that so many custom brushes I have are in abr format, so I would not like to lose the dynamic elements from the advanced CS brushes (although I'd undoubtedly adapt fine if I didn't have a choice).
Maybe worth a look too
Howler Digital Painter (pdhowler.com) Natural media painting, video, animation, 3D, visual effects
Howler 2023 full version
Sale $14.99 (Next 24 hours) reg 59.99
If it's only you using it, you can still get Microsoft Office Home & Student 2021 for one time payment of $150.
I disagree somewhat in the ripoff statement, as folks can make a choice.
I do agree that they are for the benefit of the company not the consumer, which is what you are implying (IMO); this doesn't mean that some will like it, but also doesn't invalidate my claim.
I have creative suite 4 (and and earlier version) on disk and had read Adobe will no longer allow you to use it due to their activation servers or something--That should be illegal.. It would be nice to still use it on one of my older computers. So now they have reversed that? I paid extrordinary amout of money for that software... uggg
Thank you...more things to try :-)

Inspirit
I definitely recommend these. Picked them up in a Humble Bundle like a year or two ago and especially love Flame Painter 4. FP4 is fantastic for adding spell effects and little details like dirt, scars, etc. It's the only other program that I use on renders besides Photoshop.
For something on the lighter side, I use Pixeluvo when I need to do something quick like crop an image or make a quick SSS map. Interface is pretty light. It has some nice filters for those that like to use them. It might not have all the bells and whistles of some other applications, but it was easy to use and there wasn't a huge learning curve. I used it for a long time before getting my PS sub. Right now it's full price but sometimes Steam runs it on sale (I'm sure the site does too, I just bought it on Steam for $13 at the time).

Thanks to adobe, we now have nearly every new piece of software requiring a subscription!
Affinity photo, photoshop, and topaz for my pics/vids/texturing Krita for my painting/drawings…
$10/mo for Photoshop is one of the subscriptions in my "essential" list. I was ultra happy when Photoshop moved to a subscription model because I could never afford it before that. I really like that I always have the most recent version of the program and get all the new toys as they come out. I've tried Gimp but couldn't get used to it. But if you are looking for an alternative to Photoshop that can do a good portion of what Photoshop can do, then Gimp is probably one of your best options. It's just not as user-friendly.
GIMP for Photoshop Users
https://github.com/Diolinux/PhotoGIMP
I have Gimp on my PC but I hardly use it because I have Affinity and I prefer the user experience of the latter. Gimp does come in handy if I want to make an animated Gif (which Photoshop can do but I have not found a way to do that in Affinity). On the other hand, both Photoshop and Affinity have non-destructive adjustment layers which is something, I believe, still not available for Gimp. I think that Gimp can create normal maps too but I don't think that Affinity can but there are other free resources (Materialize, for example) which can do that so not much of a problem.
Agreed. I have Photoshop CS4 that was an upgrade from Elements 6. For some reason CS4 has never accepted the Elements 6 serial number (even though I can install Elements 6 with it). Originally, I had to activate by calling Adobe. But according to their website, they no longer support CS4 and older. That is why I ended up subscribing, but I am not thrilled about it.
I remember running into an issue with my original Photoshop serial code not working (I can't for the life of me remember what version I had before CS2) but CS2 worked just fine. I was able to install CS2 anyway, so I'm not sure what the issue was with the original serial code. I think this was after their subscription services started. One thing I miss about older PS installations is how quickly they loaded. PS 2022 can be such a pain. I sometimes forget I still have CS2 if I need it.
Just use Open Source. Yes, the closed souce is nicer but it is too expensive for hobby use. If you are using software to make money that is a different ball of wax. I have a full license copy of Adobe Photoshop 6 and I no longer use it. I just use GIMP and Krita. I absolutely, hate subscriptions.
Mind Manager is a commercial mind mapping software, and pretty powerful. I'm using a free one, though, called FreePlane (https://docs.freeplane.org/).
The best reason to use a mind mapping program is for organizing your thoughts without being stifled by worry about "forgetting something". If you are a scatterbrain like me, who has a thousand different thoughts going in all different directions when brainstorming or thinking about something, a mind mapping program is really gold. You put an idea in the middle and whenever you have a thought or question, you just add the bubble and fill in the text, or image. If your mind wanders off to a different aspect od the problem, you can just simply drop that one into another branch, and by the time you finished thinking about that, you can reasily return to another earlier topic.
You then can either use the listing/image you created, or summarize the results in other software.
I used to scowl at Min Mapping, but after I was forced to used it a few times during a class, I really noticed the difference it made, and how much more efficient it made me. Here's an example:
Yeah, but now you'll be paying $3,600 annually, and $18,400 over the next 5 years; instead of being patient and saving your money, instead you're going to have to keep on paying or that $3,600 would have gone to waste!
EDIT: Yeah, my maths were crap… Ignore this chaff if you're able, I was really off base here!
How did you come up with those numbers? $10/month is $120/year.
According to the Adobe Plans page Photoshop is $20.99 a month
