Makeup and Eyebrows?

In the past I've alwasy used whatever brow/makeup came with the figure, or skin I had. But I would like to know if there's a way to create maekup and brows that can stand on thier own. I imagine it's part of the skin texture, yet I noticed that with some skins I can choose another lipstick from a totally different vender. While other times it simply won't aplly. So I'm confused. Is there a way to create just the brows/ makeup to apply over any skin?

How do you handle brows? If a character/skin doesn't have the brows/makeup you want, do you just add them in postwork?

    There are several approaches.

With http://www.daz3d.com/skin-builder-for-genesis-and-genesis2-female-s , you can create skins with no inherent eyebrows, then add in whichever eyebrows you want with included brow maker. You can, thus, create different colored brows. Skin Builder also includes makeup and tan line stuff overlays.

http://www.daz3d.com/macro-skin-for-genesis-and-genesis-2-female-s has a 'no eyebrows' option, so you can add it however you want.

There's also http://www.daz3d.com/genesis-eyebrows and a few other items to add eyebrows, plus you could try to add eyebrows using LAMH or Garibaldi hair system.

Makeup is included with a lot of skins, and I think in many cases it's a texture layer, which you might be able to 'tease out' to apply to a different skin.

Thanks, that was quick! :) The only affrodable option is The Gen Eyebrows for me right now. So I will probably try that. I love that LAMH program though. Something to put on my wish list.

Yeah I was wondering about a texture layer with the skins. I mean some of them have many different options for lipstick and eye color and sometimes even nails. I will have to take a look inside some of the skin files and see how that works. I have no problem with making my own I just don't know how to go about applying it.

  • You can also use the LIE (layered image editor) to make makeups (and eyebrows) that will go on any character of the same UV. The best way to change eyebrows is, timmins pointed out one at least, to get a skin without them. You can always edit out the eyebrows on a skin that you get, but that would need to be done in Photoshop or similar software. If you're putting on bushier eyebrows, often just putting new ones over will usually work fine. Thinner ones though, you really need to edit them out, and if there are utility maps included (bumps, normals or displacements), you'll want to remake those as well (if you're going thinner at least). Lip mats should almost always go onto a character with the same UV (though they might not blend well if the shader is different). If you like one from a character and want to use it with a different one, you can go into the material tree and just switch out the maps there. I think I made sense... maybe not...

Is there a tutorial around anywhere that explains exactly how to do what you are talking about?  For those of us who know absolutely nothing about changing textures etc but really want to learn?

Yes, I would love one too.

  • Here are a few youtube links that I found helpful in learning how to use L.I.E (layered image editor):  This one from the Daz chanel and this one from brian loukatos chanel on youtube. Both are very good videos for beginners who have never used L.I.E. before.  This video is in German, but you can watch it with the sound off and still learn a lot.

Here is the very little bit of info from the Daz documentation center here on Daz. There was also a short article on putting a logo on a t-shirt here in issue 5 of the Daz Creative magazine on page 52. Here is a pdf showing how to make your own presets.

I suggest just getting in there and playing around with it.  I've been able to do things like take my own art work in Gimp (make sure they are transperancies, though, if you want the background to show through) and have successfully put that art on t-shirts, tattoo my characters and do all sorts of fun things with it.  It is a very useful tool and not just for makeup  Hope alll that helps.

Thank you very much! I think my biggest problem is knowing how to import them into daz and where to put them.  Many of the freebies have mats for clothing etc that I would love to play with but I have no idea how to get  them INTO the program. Actually making the textures etc. in photoshop won't be an issue.

Pick a freebie that you are having trouble with the materials with and post what problems you are having with it and we'll get you through that step.  Then you'll be ready to start playing with Photoshop and creating/editing new stuff.  The LIE/overlays are a bit more of an advanced technique that does rely a bit on the basics and working familiarity with what makes up a full material/texture.

I was able to create some new eyebrows and lips...for now. I used Gimp created a new layer over the original V4. Traced her brows and saved it as a seperate transparent image. So when I find a character I like but it doesn't have the makeup/brows I like I can paste my layer over the original, change the color or whatever, and make my own. Then load the new image in the surface tab.

It's good for now. It's not made for closeups but it works for a temp solution for me. I'd like to learn how to do more though.

I never used LIE so it should help me. :)
