Nvidia 930M?

I'm doing some homework on getting a laptop for a teen who is an avid wacom user and would like to learn some 3D

In the pricerange I'm at I found an ASUS laptop with a 930M 2GB model.

while I know this is not going to let them render LoTR quality shots in 4 seconds is this a decent card for someone who may catch the 3d bug and do some simple renders in Iray.

thanks.

What is the budget for the laptop? I ask because the 930 is definitely a low end card, especially when you are talking about mobile graphic cards and Iray.

about $600 - $750, if possible I'd like to keep the make ASUS or DELL, I've had dozens of HP's and Lenovos come to me falling apart (I work in corporate IT) so I don't personally think they are well made.

at this time this person is doing far more 2D and I'd like to keep the system with an i7 CPU

I would recommend, if they are headed in that direction, 4GB of ram on the video card. Unfurtunately that usually means a GTX 960M or better, though that will usually increase your budget beyond what you are looking at. The Problem with 2GB of Ram is it doesn't hold much, as far as Iray is concerned. 1 figure clothing and hair may fit, but it just as likely won't.

Even the Lenovo Y50, which is probably the cheapest laptop with a 4GB 960M is $1100, and both Dell and ASUS are more expensive. Now Acer does have a 4GB 940M but it is only an i5, it is in the $600 range. Looks like the Dell 15 5000 series is about the only thing in that price range with both an i7 and 4GB of video RAM but they seem to be sporting a GT 920M, though those seem to be at the top end or just a little more than your budget.

I understand that. I am impatiently waiting for NVLink MOBOs and waiting for them to get stable before upgrading my home system hardware. LOL. (Though I am tempted by some of the new bells and whistles. LOL)
