Knittingmommy: I used the Christmas freebie FWSA Soft Light Probes (which I can't even link to in store, hmm). I find it really makes some nice portrait lighting, and has inspired me to get more light sets when I can.

Light has SUCH a huge impact, and it's a whole separate discipline.

The Christmas freebies were all available for 3 days only and are no longer in the store.

william the lighting on the portraits is dome+scene with dome set to low intensity and lights from free package by http://second-circle.deviantart.com/ you can find them somewhere on his deviantart : )

    And here is Gia 7!

Toyen, that looks great. I am experimenting with photometric lights. You can see here first only with hdri light and the second picture, same settings plus 2 photometric lights added.

Everyone's renders are looking amazing! @Hellboy and @Nyghtfall you are taking Iray to the next level! Wow! @Tirezi3d, you shader is almost perfect! @Toyen, your shader is always nice, though I must confess I thought your earlier high gloss skin shaders were more eyepopping, still quite amazing!!!

Thank you magnumdaz I use several maps, like normal map, diffuse map, specular roughness map, another secundairy specular map ( normal one) and another extra reflection roughness map. I want to make an extra SSS map too. The brows are fibermesh and the face is done with scan datas. Skin is done in projection modus.  I found out that it is very important you use the right translucency color. I wish Iray had chanels for fresnel maps. And also epidermal and subdermal maps. Now i have to combine them in an SSS map wich is not good, you need to have shallow sss map, mid and deep sss maps. Iray still doesnt support that unfortunately. I didn't post for a long time because I was studying skin materials.

Went back to an earlier project I really liked and worked on improving lighting and quality. Very happy with result:

I haven't been inspired lately, but I've finally got round to finishing something!

I like dramatic lighting in case anyone couldn't tell

Also I've taken to using canvases to render out an exr in addition to the png and doing all sorts of fun stuff with it. I highly recomend it. Canvases are super useful for all sorts of things

  • Her eyes look amazing J Cade. Very lifelike and expressive.

    Astonishing.

And if GIMP ever gets around to having EXR support (should be sometime this year, I think, with 2.10)... I'll have to try that. ;)

I've been inspired by improvements recently to organize my deviantart gallery (I have a new firm rule of 5 pages of Favorites and no more, so anything new on the Favorites list must knock something else off), and to revisit some of my favorite earlier works and revamp them, such as the Soldier image above.

You could probably use picturenaut to convert, It is fun to mess with

I'll give it a try. I experimented with trying to use exr to generate HDR lighting and depth maps and, after a load of work... got nowhere with it. Tried Picturenaut and lots of other stuff, bupkis. Mutter.

WOW that is fantastic render, adding the birds really give it some character, I never would have though of using snow shaders with this set.  Congratulation on a render well done

J Cade - that's a beautiful image; so simple and powerful, there's a real sense of emotion, presence, in her eyes, and great mood & mystery imparted by the shadow over one eye & side of face.  Wow!

...been trying to get this to work with Stonemason's After the War, but when I load the shell, the road surfaces on the bridges go transparent and I lose all the stonework detail in the bridge railings.

This is After the War using Let it Snow. I don't think I had disappearing walls or street.
