Someone was asking how often people start with one idea and things just sort of... go. For me, very often. This was originally just going to be a test render of a rock freebie.

Also I've taken to using canvases to render out an exr in addition to the png and doing all sorts of fun stuff with it. I highly recomend it. Canvases are super useful for all sorts of things

Love this render...could you explain further what you mean by using Canvases?

@timmons.william love your experiments...especially the skeleton image.

Genaris: I've had kind of meh results trying to do things like liquids. I tried to have liquid in a bottle but... ... yeah, didn't really work. Not enough internal pressure, and it had trouble staying in the bottle. Also, trees and foliage aren't going to work well, because they are complex and full of parts that will all shear away from each other.

aw, too bad!  But, as you've demonstrated, plenty of great potential nonetheless....

Canvasses are under render settings>advanced.  There's 2 keys to them.

They save out .exrs which contain more data (exr is similar to an hdr you get how the image looks at every exposure, which for instance makes it easier to keep detail in the shadows).

You can do different passes this includes things like depth passes, but also you can set up a pass for each of your lights, so in post, if you decide you want the backlighting to be stronger you can combine the diffferent layers in post and manually adjust the strength of the individual lights.  If you've ever used Luxrender, its a similar idea, though not as inutitive, and not something you can do during the render just after

Thanks for explaining...I hadn't realised that could be done. I will have to have a play with them...they sound interesting.

V4, happy to come out and see the light of day again.

I realized recently that Victoria 4's basemesh has a whole lot more polys than any of the Genesis models, which opens up a lot of possiblities for customizing with more realistic anatomy, expressions, and bend morphs. These renders don't have any displacement mapping, just custom morphs and normal maps on the basemesh. The skin is DAZ's Elite Lana skin with a lot of shader help from D Ordiales's tutorial on Deviant Art (I think he's worked out the best Iray skin yet, and I'll buy his video tutorial as soon as an English version is released. His Octane DAZ skin was also my favorite for that renderer). Also, I love the V4 Elite skins, especially Lana and Ariana. The bump maps on those are works of art. Clothes here were done in Marvelous Designer since trying to fit conforming clothes to custom V4 morphs is not fun or pretty.

I was thinking about the old figures, and got intrigued by the high poly-count of V3 and V4 since I was getting tired of having to make displacement maps to get the kind of realism I was looking for in G3F. In particular because I like to make a lot of custom morphs in zbrush for things like elbow, shoulder, and knee bend fixes, but making a displacement map to go with each morph was totally unfeasible. V3 turned out to be a bit too antiquated and difficult to work with, but V4 and M4 are absolutely gorgeous models. My new favorites.

I like the look of a lot of V4 stuff, but I really like the morphs and posing of Genesis onward.

Thankfully, a lot of V4/M4 stuff can be translated over to Genesis.

If you know what you are doing, then you can get V4 to look as good as any of the newer models, but its takes practice, expertise and more work. V7 works much better for most people who either do not have the relevant skills, or can't be bothered to put in the leg work to get an older mesh to look good. Given that I am lazy, and do not possess said skills, I use V7.

    Utterly brilliant, as usual!

...my main issue with Gen4 is the inability to swap clothing and lack of a viable petite teen character.

Experimenting with trying to use dynamic cloth to simulate water. It's... eh, not great. Also applied my WTP Ocean Ripples with some tweaks to add verisimilitude.

After hearing about matte objects in the studio forums, I decided to use my newfound knowledge to try out some compositing.

Here's a closeup of what I just stuck in my gallery *aaand I'm editing the one thats going to go in my gallery a bit* (check that version out too btw, it has a duck). Hardest part was making the rendered part look like it was taken by a crappy camera.

Look at the shadows her arm casts on the rock. But my favourite thing is the green reflected light on her right cheek, there are some green colored planes off camera standing in for the trees and reflecting light back.

Okay, now there's a version in my gallery (I rerendered the face so she's looking at the duck rather than staring blankly)

Everything other than the character and clothes is a photo I took. I sculpted a really basic object roughly the shape of the rock in blender, imported it into studio and turned it into a shadow catcher, which as I learned is dead easy (just go to  scripts>utilities>Create Advanced Iray Node Properties)

The hardest part was actually getting a naturalistic pose, that probably took as long as everything else combined (other than the actual rendering that is).

...so the only mesh in the image is the character then.

just the hdri and some planes acting as reflectors (2 green ones to the right for that little bit of green on the cheek, and a mirrorlike surface under where the water would be)

  • I posted these in the superhero thread, but what the heck, they're iray renders too. wink A pair of She Hulk renders, one vanity shot, one action shot. Go to my gallery here for full sized copies.

This is not done with Iray, it was rendered with Poser pro11 using HDRi back ground from HDR labs and poser Superfly render engine.  Almost iray quality results though

PS: @ Will I love what your doing with dyncreator.

The reason I asked  was because it looks like it was taken at South shore of Wataga lake in North East Tennessee . very nice render..
