Landscapes from bird's eye view?

Lets say I wanted a render of a huge aircraft flying above the landscape with the shadow casting on the ground. How does one handle like super zoomed out renders of landscapes? Like this:

Do you just use a flat image plane? Or is there a program to make environments like this? Or is their a product that comes with landscapes like this? Thanks!

Comments

  • Vue would be a program useful in making large sprawling landscapes.  http://www.e-onsoftware.com/products/vue/

Carrara does nice landsacpes, but not as big of a scale as Vue.

If you have a strong computer invest in a flight simulator such as X-Plane, FSX, or P3D, then get either some free or payware photoreal scenery and you are set.

This is Kandahar, Afghanistan I did myself with satellite data in FSX

Quick one from Carrara using it's own terrains... I added 4 planes to it ;-)

I don't have renders handy to show but Bryce also does lovely scenery.

And there are some products in the store for D/S too like http://www.daz3d.com/easy-environments-top-of-the-world

  • Also consider Infinito: http://www.daz3d.com/infinito-1-0

The attached renders were made in DAZ Studio using the Infinito plugin for the terrain.

Infinito looks intriguing. Apparently an update is being worked on.

I find Bryce easier for images like that.

These are all done in Bryce.

What do you mean? When you got closer to the image to lick it, I'm sure it seemed to get bigger.

    Blender.

    BlenderArtists thread, YouTube video.

For those interested, there are several video tutorial series about environment creation in Blender, from simple rocks to atmospheres.
