One thing that our DAZ/Poser experience tells us is that Mattel will _have_ to make all new clothings with fits for the different character shapes.  Fortunately, present production methods make this very easy; but shelf space (for people who still buy things in physical stores) may be a problem.

Maybe a whole lot of elastic based clothing will be incoming?

Or perhaps Mattel will just say "oh no, they'll need to buy clothing in all different sizes now what will we do oh right sell them many many copies of almost the same thing."

  • I loved my peaches n cream barbie in the 80's. It was the only one I treasured back then. Wish I still had it, I'd make bank. Anyway, the reason why no one is buying Barbie is because no one wants realism. Barbie fullfill every woman's dream of having a closet fill of couture clothes and a pink corvette. Bring back the fantasy, Mattel.

I can honestly say that I have once never dreamed of owning couture clothes, or a corvette of any colour - especially not pink. That said, I preferred Lego, Matchbox cars, and board games to Barbie. I had a Sindy doll, but I didn't really play with her much. Except when Lion-O kidnapped her, or when she ended up in a wrestling match with The British Bulldog, or when she got blasted into space while strapped to Thunderbird 3. I also remember Action Man talking her into parachuting off the garage roof - that didn't end well at all. :D

What gets me is that Mattel have always argued that Barbie had to be the shape she was so the draping on the clothes would be realistic. It all looks the same on every one of the new shapes - exactly the way it did on the original.

I suspect that Barbie's sales also declined a bit because a lot of modern girls do rely on playing with toys defined as girl's toys.  The doll also was stuck in a no girl's zone of a bit too retro to be realistic and not stylized enough to be aspirational. I think GI Joe got stuck in that same bind.

Barbie lost a HUGE market share to the, shall we say "less aspirational, more party centric" Bratz line, which begat the true monster sales of Monster High, which is competed against by Equestria Girls, which is overshadowed by Ever After High...and Matel lost the Disney Princess line just in time for FrozenMania.

Be interesting to find "barbie morphs" for V4-G2f-G3f....I have to imagine someone's cooked up that recipe at some point.

I have seen an image around on the net of someone holding a 'barbie' V7. I honestly thought it was a photo of a 3d print for awhile (probably because I was so busy patting myself on the back that I recognised Victoria appearing somewhere that wasn't a 3D community.)

  • DAZ and Mattel should become partners in a product called "Print your own Barbie and Ken".  With 3D printing you could design your own figure in DS, print and assemble the body parts, then dress your figure in DS and print the clothing.  They could sell the printer and the various material "inks."

  • Haha

I have those freebie Autodesk apps on my iPad for 3D printing etc

Even as a child, I thought the Barbies were ugly as sin and the first thing I did to every one I was given was shear their hair off.  No Barbie was safe from my scissors.

I'm picturing the evil kid from toy story.

I'm thinking of the film Small Soldiers.

So all you need is a way of getting DS content into Autodesk, then you can "print your own Barbie"!!!!!!

Let's face it. What we all do is simply an adult version of dressing up dolls and taking pictures of them. Albeit with expensive dolls, wardrobes and environments. We're just adults playing with dolls and calling it art. Nothing wrong with that mind you. cheeky

Yes, and its just as much fun as it was then.  maybe even more so lol.  And maybe, someday, I might get paid for it.  But even if I don't, despite the amount of money I spend on this, its still cheaper than therapy.

I heard on the news today that Matel announced that they’re releasing some new Barbies. Beside their standard Barbie there will now be a short Barbie, a tall Barbie, and curvy Barbie. My wife pointed out that for each different Barbie, you’d have to buy different sized outfits. Sounds familiar. There’s nothing to the rumor that Matel will be changing the name from Barbie to Vickie. (BTW no new Ken has been announced)

    Ah...six months at least...

...nuts, have to wait that long to play with crossdressing.

Okay, I'm not going near that one!

I never had a Barbie (perhaps I'm too old) and my favorite doll was a ragdoll my granny made for me. But very young I fell in love with horses so I had a collection (not very large) of little plastic horses. Different poses and colors. I'd take an old blanket and shape it into hills and valleys, make cabins and fences with my Lincoln logs and place my horses around. Some wild and running free in the hills others with the people. Then I'd take my brownie camera and photograph them though that only worked outside (light).

No wonder I ended up doing this 3D stuff.

Mattel has been focusing on Monster High dolls. So not only are they projecting a far more unrealistic image than what Barbie brainwashed into young girls they are also suggesting it can be achived by a plastic surgeon/mad scientist.

Monster High has me SO conflicted!  My 7yo son absolutely ADORES it, and the one time I kinda 'casually' pointed out that girls don't actually look like that, he looked at me like I'd lost half my brain cells, and said, 'Of COURSE not...it's a cartoon!'  But at the same time, it's kinda got a girl-power vibe thing going, and he really digs it, so...  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'd imagine the fact that she isn't an iPhone also hampers her sales these days.

This is why Barbie, and probably other toy sales are down. Also, I liked the new version of Barbie. But don't get me started on the 'new' My Little Pony angry I am an '80's kid.

I didn't try for Barbie, but I used the ball joint doll for G2F to make an actual doll..   worked out pretty well I think.

I like the idea of Monster High (and Fairy Tale High) because I like the whole sons and daughters of monsters/fairy tales thing...but ACK the stories are so bad..it's all about who's dating who and I want to go to this party and so on... So for my freaky shaped fashion doll story content, MLP: Equestria Girls, which is all power of friendship and music and magic and muffins.

That was my thoght when I read an article about the new shapes a few weeks ago; I'm sure there are a lot of outfits in the store that parents wouldn't want to see their kids dressing up their dolls in (Tangled, anyone?). It's interesting that Mattel has set up a special phone number to handle questions (and presumably complaints) about the clothing from one figure not fitting the others. I wouldn't want to have to be answering those phones. No autofit, no UV switching...

A new Ken will be out SOON. ; )

Unless there is a short, pudgy, balding version of Ken I won't be impressed.

When they release a slightly overweight transgender Barbie with detacheable equipment--that's when I'll be impressed.

No, this outfit: http://www.daz3d.com/tangled-outfit-for-genesis-3-female-s-and-genesis-2-female-s   This one probably isn't Barbie-friendly either: http://www.daz3d.com/dragon-queen-for-genesis-3-female-s

Hrm; the episodes I've seen my eldest watch (it's on Netflix) are definitely standard kids fare.  They're not about dating, and parties (those things play a role, but they're not the focus); they're morality plays dressed up in colorful characters.  Find a genie that makes it easy to pass your tests?  Oh, look, when you find yourself needing the knowledge you should have gained studying for the test, it's going to make you embarassed.  Afraid of folks who are different?  When you're forced by a plot twist to spend time with them, you find out they're just like you.  Sure, the rhetorical hats they hang it on are about crushes and cliques and stuff like that, but the underlying tales are the same as almost all the other kids shows.

Mind you Netflix appears to only really have the 'movie' storylines, which might be different than the 'webisodes', but I don't know.

That said, yes, my son also is a big fan of Equestria Girls, and MLP in general.

I didn't create the joints, but I've actually been trying to create a reasonable Barbie from G3F.

Photoshop isn't going to fix poke through. Better start investing in different colored Sharpies.

New Barbie has NO Poser support .... Mattel will probably blame Smith Micro.

    lol

Smith Micro will no doubt point the finger at Mattel, meanwhile, DAZ will develop an encrypted version that can't be used with any other Mattel toys.

LMAO....YES! And the fight... ah competition begins!

Yikes. My first Barbie was from 1962. So dating myself. blush

The one above is cute. She reminds me of Skipper, Barbie's little sister (about 1963). She had long blonde hair with bangs, a headband, and flat feet.
