As to 4.9, I don't want it creating directories for Daz Connect that I will not use, or mess with my current setup as I have a dual drive system where my content libraries are not in the Documents folder on the C drive.

I have a multiple drive system. My content sits on a dedicated SSD. The folders that Studio auto created in the Documents folder (which isn't on my C: drive) contain 0 bytes.

    I use 4.9. It doesn't bite.

Most of my stuff these days is IRAY.

You can find it all here:

...again, I am in an incredibly tight budget, so tight in fact I didn't even purchase one item during MM, not even a freebie as my PC subscription expired in the last week of February (first time in 8 years).

Before I purchase anything, particularly a plugin or conversion tool that claims "it is the answer", I need to know 100% that it will work the way I would expect it to. Yes, Daz has a 30 day return policy (where I can even request the funds be returned to my bank account), however, other 3D vendors do not or only give you credit after a long drawn out process, so I have to be very careful.

This again is the reason I am holding back for the G3 version of Skin Builder as the previous editions have worked extremely well for my needs.

Part of me is almost beginning to consider rolling back to Daz 4.6 so I can use the AoA lights and SSS shaders without issue.

Oh, I tried to do a Girl 7 & Guy 7 render to post here as I'm getting better at choosing setting but my PC can only handle 1 character at a time! crying

    Aslan Court!

Took... a lot of work. Between the fact it's an elegant and huge scene and wrestling with lighting...

    But finally!

The lighting's really good. I always wondered if lions & such have lived in Europe in the last 12000 years because they are used so often on Wappen and such in Europe although there are no lions there now that aren't in zoos.

Well, it should be noted that ancient people were quite happy to trade in animals, so there's that.

Not to derail the thread, but cave Lions did exist in Eurasia during the ice age, so it's highly likely that pre-modern humans were well aware of these powerful gigantic creatures. http://www.prehistoric-wildlife.com/species/p/panthera-leo-spelaea.html

Lions were brought England. They had them at the tower of London in about 1240.

That is an interesting place but I don't think those are really the crown jewels on the premises.

Go to Edinburgh and see the Honours of Scotland, the oldest crown jewels in the British Isles :)

From the Tower of London website

Under guard and still in use

The Crown Jewels at the Tower of London are a unique working collection of royal regalia and are still regularly used by The Queen in important national ceremonies, such as the State Opening of Parliament (watch for the ‘in use’ signs).

You'll find the Crown Jewels under armed guard in the Jewel House at the Tower of London.

Large animals were kept in a menagerie at the Tower until the death of King George IV in 1830, after which they were transferred to Regent's Park (now London Zoo). Also, the Coat of Arms of England (created in the Middle Ages) is three lions.

Wow, so they were real!  smiley  I can hardly believe it as the room was filled from one end to the other with all these jewels. They had ravens & those Beef Eater guys that hung out all the time too.

Wonder how those display cases of jewels would take to render if they were modeled in DAZ and rendered in iRay.

Wow, some very fun free stuff. I was at first wondering whether I'd have much to do with a Michael 4 morph, but then remembered I have GenX2. Yay! The hands didn't look right (fingernails clipping weirdly), so I skipped that and used beastial hands from... Creature Collection, maybe. Also had to move the jaws back a little (clipping with lips).

    Otherwise, it came out fantastically.

Also used Mec4D's PBS shaders vol 2 for much of the architecture, though I ended up using my procedural shaders for the stairs (everything else I tried looked ugly pixelated that close to the camera).

I think it's a pretty good caricature of you know who. :-)

Who? Seriously, tell me I have no clue O.O I just started sculpting and this came out. Does he look like some celebrity?

Obama, but mainly because if you've ever noticed, caricaturists always draw politicians with big mouths. The eyes however would need to slant downwards on the outside I think (from memory).

No way! He looks nothing like Obama : D At least not to me : D

Really nice images posted.  I'm going to have to track them all down and the gallery!  Ivy and Fishtales, I love the dragon images!   Will, don't you just love that little script?  I've transferring quite a bit of the M4 stuff to G2M lately.  You should check out what I was doing on my thread in the Art Forum if you are interested.  Toyen - what program did you use to sculpt him?  He looks great.  Can't say I think he looks like Obama either.  I like him, though.

Here is my latest Iray image.  My wolves were a lot of trouble and I am happy to finally put this one to bed because I need a break from wolves!

Gotten a few commissions lately. I don't charge much for friends, but hey. It's nice to be validated. ;)

...haven't been very active here as of late.  Part of it been pretty broke to purchase any new Iray utilities and part due to a bit of burnout messing with settings to try and compensate. Yeah, outdoor scenes turn out OK but really struggling with interior and night settings. as well as getting textures to look right.

A good example of the latter is again in the two different renderings I did of the bus stop scene, The surfaces appear nice and detailed in the 3DL version but in the Iray one they seem kind of flat. In the London street scene I did, I am unable to get the texture of the cobblestones to not look like a printed linoleum floor. Same for the brick street in the bus stop scene. I've increased the bump and displacement but it seems to do little if anything to bring out any detail.   I won't even go into the issues I keep running into with skin and hair. As I cannot use Iray view mode without crashing the programme I am unable to make use of HDRI environments without a lot of time consuming test renders just to check the positioning of the dome.

The bottom line is I feel I am spending way more time adjusting and "tweaking" things than actually getting any meaningful work done. I wish there were good PDF tutorials, but the trend today is towards video, for which I have poor retention and therefore must play them over and over and over... to glean any information.

With iRay HRDI lighting I think the iRay ones will be flat as well as lighting for typical cloudy days in rainy areas, rain forest canopies and so on. You can try and search for an HRDI with a particularly bright moon and in an urban area with two or three sources of nighttime light to create a more interesting lighting effect but I think those will be hard to find. Next time I visit Manhattan, nighttime Time Square on a full moon night would be an ideal place to create an nice HDRI. Also, in Washington, DC and places with lots of monuments that are lit at night would be good, Las Vegas Sunset Strip would be good, South Miami Beach would be good, and so on.

...the issue isn't so much with with lighting in HDRIs, it is with not being able to see the HDRI dome in normal textured viewport mode when setting the scene up.  To actually see how the dome is oriented, I need to run a number of test renders until I can get the positioning right, a tedious and time consuming process.  Not good to have a vehicle that is not positioned correctly on a road or a character ending up say, standing in a fountain.

As I have a very old GPU (1 GB) it will not support Iray view mode and almost immediately dumps to the CPU. Once that occurs, the screen refresh rate becomes extremely sluggish and the programme crashes soon afterwards.  I do not have the funds for a GPU with more memory (even a 4 GB GTX 740) at this time as I am on a fixed income.
