Off topic question - screen capture/recording (Free?)

What software do people recommend for capturing/recording the screen? I am a teacher and would like to share my work in Daz with my students in video format and I wondered if anybody could recommend some free solutions

If you have an nVidia video card for rendering Iray, then there's a free screen recording software included with the Geforce Experience dashboard called shadowplay.

It was created to record and share real-time game videos and I've not used it yet so I don't know if it will work outside of games that the geforce experince dashboard finds on your PC...

I think CamStudio was the one I used before, but I don't really remember

Personally I've used Open Broadcaster Software for the little screen recording needs I've had.

Do you have a Mac or a PC?!

On a mac you can do this straight from QuickTime which is built into the OS

On windows there are probably dozens of bloatware apps to do this for free you can DL from CNET or Softpedia that will force install adware along with it. I've learned that the hard way.

I've used NVIDIA's shadow play, included with Geforce Experience, to record my screen in Daz Studio and other programs. You just have to configure it to capture desktop, which is easy to do.

Thank you. I've literally just bought and received a Geforce 750 from ebay, so I'll be installing that tonight. Shadowplay does sound interesting actually.

I was looking into Camstudio, but I get massive Malware warnings when trying to install it and looking on the internet now there are a number of forums that agree. So, I am keen to steer clear.

Sorry, I have a PC. (and not a very good one if I'm being honest)

That may have just been one of the ones I looked at (I looked at a few trying to decide which one to use to record something and that's one of the names I recognized. But if it's that bad, I probably passed on it as well. I may have just simply used a trial of fraps scince it was a 1 time thing...

Anyways, if your pc will run it (you mentioned it was older) I'd just simply go with shadowplay. It's free and from a well known software company so you know it's safe.

I use OBS for my recordings and it's pretty amazing what this little program can do. The great thing about OBS is that it has a variety of capture modes, and can stream or record directly to video.

Windows 10 has this built in, no 3rd party software needed. I upgraded from win7 last week and found this out. Screenies, recording, audio. All launched through the windows key. I havent actually tried it yet but since you asked:)

It's been years since I used a PC. I did a Google search and found CamStudio. They say it's free. Years ago I used a free, older version of Camtasia, and loved it. Give CamStudio a try?!

I've had good luck with Electa Live Screen Recorder, it's free and you can record screen activities with or with out the mouse pointer, and either system sounds or use a mic. You can do picture in picture too if you have a webcam, but I've never used that feature.

I also started with that free version of Camtasia they gave away back then. You could (maybe still can?) actually upgrade to a newer version with it at upgrade price. They also released a Mac version recently btw, but I don't know how it is. Their software has always been of high quality though, so I wouldn't expect less from the Mac version.

I also used OBS for the tutorials I recorded on Youtube and Twitch. You can learn it in 15 minutes, the only hard part is configuring it (and if you follow instructions, it's not hard either).

I haven't heard anything about any of this, huh. If you find out what programs do it and where to find them, could you let us know? Thanks.

    It's the Xbox-app on Windows 10.
