If they did a separate program with just the 2D and 2.5D painting I'd grab it. That was the part of ZBrush I loved when I bought it years ago. (They had copy protection back then and one day I went to run it and it said I had to register again and refused to load up. I had paid good money for it and I was so angry I never used it again).
Question: 4r8 is announced as free for current users - are the updates to that version normally free, or paid?
I bought ZBrush at 4R2.
4R3, 4R4, 4R5, 4R6, 4R7 all free. 4R8, will be free.
All the upgrades are VERY substantial. Dynamesh and ZRemesher were among the big deals, I forgot which version.
Soon after I got in ZBrush price went up to $795.
Those who gets current 4R7 at $636 are very lucky people. They got A LOT MORE than those who got in at 4R2 at $695.
Pixologic has yet tyo charge for an update - I bought ZB3 when Daz had it at a discount and got 4 free, but as far as I know even people who bought version 1 have had every update so far for free. As I recall Pixologic has said that ZB5 will not be a free update - they were bound to have to start charging at some point, as the number of new users couldn't sustain development forever.

Pixologic guys are so generous to their early supporters. I don't expect ZB5 to be free, will gladly pay whatever to sustain their development...
I just watched the 4R8 videos and I feel almost embarrassed that they're giving all these goodies for free.
4R8 video for those who're still seriously considering going full ZBrush
It's ok if those interested remain undecided. Though 20% ZBrush sales will be ending within half a day, ZBrushCore's 20% discount + upgrade to full route is still opened to Oct 14th.
Official words:
you will be able to upgrade at a discounted price. Just how discounted remains to be determined.
All features in ZBrushCore are either already in ZBrush 4R7 or will be part of the free upgrade to 4R8.
If you've been intimidated by ZBrush, have never dipped into the world of CG, are a hobbyist, are focused on 3D printing or just can't afford ZBrush at this time then ZBrushCore is a great alternative. If you later decide that you want the professional feature set in ZBrush, there will be an upgrade path.
In other words, ZBrushCore is a solid application for general users or a stepping stone, depending on individual needs.
Just confirming that you can make morphs for DAZ stuff in Zbrush core in case anyone wasn't sure. I exported Genesis 3 at 0 subdivision, opened it in Core, moved the ears around (ONLY use the Move tool), exported as an OBJ, and imported the morphs with Morph Loader Pro.
Thanks that is good to know I got mine today and still playing with it.I spend 20 mins trying to figure out why GOZ did not work lol.I really like zbrushcore I think it is complicated enough for me just now.
I am having a bit of trouble though, maybe someone more familiar with Zbrush can help. I subdivided the figure twice in Core and worked on morphs, then lowered the subdivision back to 0 and exported. While the morph worked fine in Studio, it did not have nearly as much detail when subdivided twice in Studio as it did when subdivided twice in Zbrush. Is this expected or is there a way to fix it?

When you worked on the divided mesh in ZBrush you were actually pulling the additional vertices around, applying SubD to the mesh in DS doesn't bring those additional movements in it just smoothes the base, morphed, shape. The only way to get the detail in DS is to use Displacement or Normal maps - the full ZBrush can make those (though it's a bit of a pain with the multi-map Daz humans), I don't know if Core can.
All UV mapping is disabled in ZBrushCore, so that'll be a no for discplacement or normal maps - it would need to be exported and baked down in a separate program.
Since I'm here, might as well share some of my own experimentations...
I've been playing around to see if i can get some degree of hard surface happening -
Also tried a landscape, although i maybe went a bit OTT with the mesh density for the rocks, LOL... one render is highlighting the sculpt, the other is the finished image (it was originally going to be a desert canyon, but I changed my mind half way through and made it a coastal inlet instead)
With the Intuos tablet, it's $199, so great price for the tablet!
Does anyone know if you can download a Mac and PC version or if you can only use it on one computer...
Price is for MAC OR PC version only, you have to decide before you download if I remember correct. This version can be used and activated on 2 Computers, as long as it is not used on both at one time. There is an offer for an additional license for PC users to use on MAC or for MAC users to use on PC with a 50% discount, but not available for Wacom bundle purchase. Still the bundle is awesome deal if you don't have a tablet yet, especially as it includes the medium size one (not the small).
I can not see anywhere on the site that Zbrush Core can be upgraded to a fully functionally vers. of Z Brush, so I'm still just saving since I know I am going to eventually be buying a copy of Z Brush in the future, but it would be nice to be able to start training now while I'm getting my cash straight.
In the email I got from Pixologic it did say that Zbrush Core users got a discount on full Zbrush should they wish to upgrade.
Edit: I was wrong...sorta. It was a in a link I followed from the email ;). Here. I'm not quite sure what "in the near future" means, but at least they did mention it and I was sure I saw it :).

Sounds like if you're buying Zbrush Core, it's with the understanding that this is a strictly introductory (or educational) vers of the program. The discounts for a full version is nice, but it really seems that depending on how fast you learn the basics, you're paying for the learning experience in addition to buying the actual software at a later date.
No, Core is a light version of ZBrush... it can be used commercially witghout restriction, but all the advanced features of the pro version of ZBrush are not available. There is no time limit on using it.
The "in the near future" part about upgrading to pro ZBrush from Core simply means they haven't released that info yet, but they will share that info in the near future. Until they do, everything else is pure guesswork.

Hi :-)
Is there any info how long this 20 % for R7 will be active ?
If you live on US west coast you still have half a day I think....

Germany :-/
and i cant add this backup to cart
A ZBrusher spotted the 30 brushes that will be included in ZBrushCore.
These are very commonly used brushes by the pros. All the basics are covered....
The IMM brushes are "mini modelers" in their own right.
These brushes will mean it's possible to make clothing, robots, characters, animals, buildings, props.

Yeah unfortunately it doesn't support plugins. :(

That terrain looks really good Jabba, you should consider either making freebie landscapes or even selling them.
Wow, 150$ looks like a reasonable investment for Zbrush beginners!
What is the price of an upgrade to full version? Couldn't find anything at their website/store.

Non starter for me, there is no texturing capability, morphing and sculpting isnt enough. I agree, 3d coat is still the way to go on a budget.
new tutorials are up for those of you that bought core or still thinking about it http://www.zbrushguides.com/getting-started-with-zbrushcore/
