Elephant Man... Kane from Alien (and the shout out in Spaceballs)... Watership Down... the dragon in Merlin... the War Doctor... 1984... V for Vendetta... the voice of Aragorn from the animated LOTR... and so much more. He was part of a lot more of popular culture than people perhaps realize.

This one makes me soooo, soooo sad :(

    *sigh*

Not really. This will be now until the end of our own lives. Most of us are at "that age" now which means they're old enough to reach the end of their lives. "They" being the actors and musicians we grew up with and know :'( He was in so many things I love - I had a super geeky thing for Merlin and Harry Potter, love the movie "The Outlander" (do look it up), of course really love the Alien franchise - at least the first two movies, and V for Vendetta is my very very favorite movie ever. God speed Mr. Hurt.

This is a very sad development. There was a very good tribute to him on BBC News 24 earlier this morning.  It's good to see so many of you mentioning his work on the Ridley Scott classic "Alien".

The thing I always liked about John Hurt was that he picked parts for the challenge - not the box-office glory. An example is the movie 'Skeleton Key' where he played a truamatised mute. Not a single word of dialog, but he really stole the movie.

In our house it was always known as I CLAVDIVS (with the Vs pronounced, because of the romanesque writing in the titles.

A reminder of some of the things John Hurt was known for:

By coincidence, I was watching the series I Claudius last week.  And as a DC resident, his role in 1984 hits a little too close to home.  RIP.

...sadly, so true, but yes, yet another great loss.

Just the other day Mike Connors, best known for his television role as the detective Joe Mannix passed on at the age of 91 as well.

I loved him as Caligula.  Sorry to hear of his passing.  A great actor.

  • I mostly know him as the War Doctor on Dr Who.

One of his best roles was in a British TV bio-pic about the flamboyant but often tragic Quentin Crisp who suffered through years of being an outwardly gay man in a time when it was illegal.
