Looking for an exploding planet.

Does anyone know of a planet prop (or even just a sphere of some sort) that can morph into an explosion? So we have planet, then we have cracking planet, and then we ;have explosion.

  • Maybe you could do something with Catamaran's Shapeshifter: http://www.morphography.uk.vu/dlcatamaran.html scroll part way down.

This is why I wish Carrara was an ongoing thing. It has a lovely "explode" modifier.

Although for a planet, I'd love to see the surface crack and reveal glowing lava before the actual explosion.

  • If you know your way around Blender, there is a tutorial for making an exploding planet.

I think the finished OBJ file is available somewhere. I can't find it, at the moment.

  • Thanks guys. This is for an animation in which the planet explodes, so layering them I think would'nt be feasible.

Catamaran does some tight work! I'm not that good though. The most I can do with Blender is create a morph, limited, and fuse clothing together to make dynamic props. That's it. LOL.

I remember someone had made one a long time ago... but alas! I can't remember.

Interesting factoid.  If one found one's self out in space watching the Earth being destroyed by some aliens like, for example, the Vogons making room for a hyperspacial express route through our star system, it would be a slow process.  If the surface exploded sending pieces straight outward into space at escape velocity of 25,000 miles per hour, it would take 10 minutes for the pieces to expand the planet to double the diameter of the intact Earth.  And by time an hour had passed, the pieces (if they kept moving at 25,000 miles an hour and didn't slow down due to gravity) the diameter of all the fragments would still only be six times as wide as an intact Earth.  As explosions go it would seem rather sluggish and tame! surprise

Of course the Vogons could plan for bigger faster explosions but the paperwork and cost overruns might be deemed inefficient overkill.

  • The problem the Vogons face would be their teenage Vogonites, who demand bigger and better spx effects in the vast universe they call their playground. I wouldn't doubt that there was a Stephen Vogonberg out there right now exploring bigger and brighter ways to wow his audience.

Layer them in your movie editor or After Effects. Render them in your DazStudio or Poser or Cararra whatever you use. Have a look at ILM or Virtual Backlot Studio on YouTube to get an idea of what I mean.

As we get older, memory is the first of three things to go. I forgot what the other two things are.

Add a few procedural materials; place it within one of Coflek-Gnorg's "Space Sphere" environments, and * BOOM! * instant Kryton, Alderaan, whatever.

    Thanks for the file link!

    Sincerely,

    Bill
