Poser 11?

Hey there,

I just saw there's a great deal on Poser (40% off) and I'm seriously thinking of grabbing it.

Any thoughts about it? I can't see it replacing Daz for me but it has some nifty looking features.

What're other people's opinions?

Thanks!

I continue to use them both. Poser 11 Pro has a comic render feature that's quite useful.

I personally don't use it any longer (have versions 5, 6, 7, 2012 and 2014) now that I am used to DS and newer content (genesis figures) don't work as well as they do natively in DS IMO.

I picked it up on sale a while back and am learning it too. I feel both programs shine at different things. There are some great tools in Poser that I wish Daz had and vice versa. Both are very useful.

Thank you all for your thoughts VERY much! I really appreciate it.

A couple questions to those who use it:

    1) What do you feel the learning curve is? I haven't used it since it was brand new.

    2) What do you think of the render times?

    Thanks again!

Learning curve for me was steep compared to Daz (in regards to material settings).

But render times are heaps better for me in Firefly, Superfly is slower but still way quicker than Iray. (but then again I don't have a nvidia card with alot of cores). There are some differences between 11 and 11 pro so I'd check those out to see if the pro would be better for the bucks especially if you do animation or use zbrush.

Poser is getting old (needs a complete rebuild), i wouldn't get it again, still regret that i updated from game dev to latest 11 pro. Blender & Dstudio (still lacks animate) is more fun these days.

Well based on a video of Poser 12 Beta I will be upgrading to it. It has the looks of a total UI update (upgrade is subjective) and likely much bug fixes and enhancements elsewhere in there code base.

If you are refering to the video I saw, I believe that is what someone thought Poser 12 needs to have, not what it is currently working on. Someone else posted that the video in question was actually from another package.

Given SM is currently rehiring its development staff, I would be amazed if the new team had not only mastered the current codebase, but already created a beta version with a new UI and packed with cool features.

To answer the OP regarding Poser 11, it is tricky to say if it is worth it or not. I did grab it, but it only cost me $40 to get my PP2012 pro updated to Poser Pro 11, so I was really just getting it to check out the new features. I switched to DS a couple of years ago, and nothing in PP11 was likely to make me switch back, but it was fun re-rendering some of my older poser scenes in Superfly to see what they looked like. I have not really played with it enough to give the new renderer justice, but the lack of a decent preview mode like we have with Iray in DS is a big disadvantage in my opinion. I also found setting a HDR somewhat awkward, but it could have been there was an easier way I have not discovered.

Yes, that was also my impression. Unfortunately.

    Not plausible no.

From what I read they are working on another SR for Poser 11 - not Poser 12.

I have Poser 8 through 11, to Check content. I buy the updates when they go on sale, so I stay current.

I use poser for several things:

    • to look at the Poser Materials so I can make better versions of Daz Studio Materials. I recently did it with my World Travels rebuild project.
    • if something loads into DAZ Studio all wacky, I can see what is suppose to look like, so I can fix it.
    • if Morphs don't work in Studio, I've used it to pull out the Morph Targets as OBJ files, and then Bring them over to Studio, through Hexagon.

But all my content creation and render work is done in DAZ Studio, due to the wackiness of the PNU.
