How to pronounce the names of some products and artists' names

I understand that by writing in these forums, we are communicating by using written words and there really is no need to pronounce anything. But the other day I was showing my partner some of my work, the products, the renders, and she started asking me questions, which I answered. We were laying in bed, and we talked about DAZ, and how she never knew 3D art and concepts like rendering were so foreign to her before she met me (we've been living together for two years and a half now). So we were talking about certain products, and how I like this and that artist's work, how some artists specialize in a certain type of products... And then I realized that there are so many products and artists with exotic names that make everything more appealing, and I don't really know the correct pronunciation for them. I am just making up some sort of pronunciation, but what if they are not what the artists intended?

Many names in the DAZ environment are quite straightforward... there is only one way to pronounce "Victoria", "Michael", "Olympia", "Charlotte", "Edward", "The Girl"...

But how do you pronounce Aiko? Is it "A-ko" or "eye-KO"? I always thought it was "eye-KO".

@Mousso, how do you pronounce your name? "MOO-so"? "Mouse-o"? Also, how do you pronounce Izanami ("Ee-za-NAH-mee"?) and Nylyssa? ("nee-LEE-sah"?)

@Bluejaunte, how do you pronounce your name? ("Blue-Johnt"?) How do you pronounce Sahel? (is it "sa-HELL"? "SAY-hell"?) Misumi? ("me-SOO-me"?)

@Jepe, how do you pronounce your name? I assumed it was "YEH-peh" since you are German.

If anyone who is reading this can say another name with a pronunciation you are in doubt, add it below. By the way, how do you guys pronounce these or other products' names?

If any other PA's can supply pronunciation where it is not obvious, I ask them to please do so. I am curious, and I guess I am not alone. Thank you in advance :)

Lyrra - (leer-ah)  From the Welsh god Llyr.  Sounds like the italian coinage

    NOT Lie-rah. I am not a swan

Are you using the true welsh pronunciation of the letter Ll  at the beginning ?   she says with a wicked grin

  • ArielRGHArielRGH Posts: 105

I believe she is! Thank you Lyrra! At some point I'll buy one of your dresses :)

Chohole - less rolled, more of the common harder L like in 'Laura'.  I can pronounce it properly ( I am half welsh after all) but other people tend to have trouble ;)  And my Lakota friend pronounces it more like Leahrah, but eh. Close enough ?  I know I mangle her name so I think we're even

Anyone from DAZ on the pronunciation of Aiko?

  • SnowSultanSnowSultan Posts: 3,678

Ariel, it's pronounced "eye-ko". Japanese "a" has an "ah" sound, and combined with "i" (which normally is pronounced "ee"), becomes "eye". Hope that helps.  :)

    That's what I thought, but I wanted confirmation :)

    Maclean = MahClayne

'Mac' is fine, but defnitely not MacKleen!

I'd love to know if the PA name "Polish" is meant as someone from Poland or what you do to furniture and models to finish them off (Poh-lish vs pah-lish).

Did anyone bring up Chohole? Cause that one has me stumped.

Sorry Maclean, I've been saying it wrong for like a decade. It'll take some time to fix.

I want to add to the question of the OP:

Do we all have to pronounce all those names the american way? Or would it be possible to pronounce the name of figure supposed to be japanese like a japanese would? And how can we be sure which nationality and therefor name nomenclature we have to use for characters where none is given? Is Michael an American? Italian? German?

  • ArielRGHArielRGH Posts: 105

@Maikdecker... Since Michael is from DAZ Originals, I assume he's American and therefore I use an English pronunciation. I might be wrong but no one from DAZ has answered to this thread... yet. Of course if he were German it would be "me-kha-EL"

Fun thread, he, I've been on the wrong for maclean as well, and yes that will get hard to change

I will add @saiyaness to the ones I'd like to know how to say it

I pronounce Giselle zhizell and Daz hasn't arrested me - yet.

Chohole    Taken from the name of a Park Gate Lodge that we lived in for almost 20 years.  Back when the gate was first named it would have been the Charcoal Burners gate, or Charcoal gate, got a little corrupted over the years (1637 was when the gate was first erected)  to normally be sort of Chuhole with a very short vowel sound in the first syllable more like there actually isn't a vowel there at all.

My screen name is pronounced "Lester."

And I will add, nobody asked about Mattymanx, but for years I said it "matty manx," when in fact it's Matty Man X.  Similarly, I'm an idiot for not getting this one, but "MaleM3dia" is pronounced "Male Media."  I was literally saying "Male Em Three Deeah."  For real.

My username is pronounced ʤeɪ keɪd. So I hope that clears up everything for anybody.

Not sure how to pronounce that "kha" part... sounds to "hard"

In german, Michael sounds more like Me - cha (as in CHArles) - ale (as the beer) to me...

And that Giselle... should sound like Gee - thell (with a soft th) when pronounced like the french would do it (afaik... my french ain't that good)
