I'm interested in this one.

Being an older product, how does it render in iray?

    Thanks,

Looks like additoal cost to get the best out of this product (DAZ horse is part of todays deal if you buy 3 or mere new items)

You get the Daz horse free though

You can use the horse with the simple built-in Iray conversion just fine, maybe dial down the gloss a little bit. But the additional products for Iray also contain bump maps, that the 3DL version didn't have.

If you want lots of different types of horses, you may prefer the "Daz horse 2 pro bundle" instead of the "Daz horse 2 starter bundle" as the pro bundle contains more breeds and skin textures.

    See this thread - https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/253271/daz-horse-2-textures-only-available-in-the-pro-bundle

Honestly, I'd get the daz horse 2 pro bundle. It has a lot of stuff, including some stuff you can't get unless you get the pro bundle (like some of the breeds).

It converts to Iray fairly easily, but what Bee said; the lack of a bump map is odd and annoying (you can sort of fake it with the white horse skin put into bump, and horses tend to have a very glossy look anyway)

Also, there are some free presets for the horse in LAMH's site ( http://www.furrythings.com/ ) and you can get some decent effects using my Oso Furry (I don't have a mask preset for Daz Horse, but if you keep the fur length very low, it should be fine).

Does anyone here have both of these products? Is there one you like better than the other? Would the DA settings work on the Centaur 7 as well? I have the Horse 2 Pro Bundle so some nice Iray shader settings would be good to get while the sales is going.

@Quasar, I have IDG Iray Essentials - Daz Horse 2 and Centaur 7 and have used it. Inane Glory and DestinysGarden do a wonderful job of creating Iray material presets for the Horse 2 using only the images that come with the Horse 2 Pro Bundle. You can purchase the hides separately for the Centaurs, but not the Horse. If you are picking up Horse 2 for free today, you won't get the all those materials.

So if you're getting the Horse 2 base for free today, I recommend you purchase the DA Horse 2 Iray Material Presets. It's one of the related products at 80% off, and includes new maps for Bump, Normal and Glossiness, as well as head and body materials for a White horse, All but the White horse preset use whichever materials you have for the horse, which comes with 3 Horse Material Options: Bay, Black, and Grulla.

(I picked up the DA Horse 2 Iray Material Presets today. I didn't buy it when the product was released because I already had the IDG product. But once I learned more about the product I added it to my wishlist.)

I am also wondering which of the two to pick up. I was under the impression that the DA one will work on all the DAZ horse skins, ie including the ones from the Pro Bundle (all of which I have), since it applies the preset whilst leaving the original maps in place It would however be a 2 click operation rather than a one click one like the IDG solution. I am leaning towards the DA one as the promos look slightly better (maybe due to the extra glossy and normal maps (the IG one only has extra bump maps, I think). All the same they both look good, so not much to choose between them.

Since they both have such high discounts right now I picked up both the DA Horse 2 Iray product AND the IDG Iray Essentials product. I really like them both!

I'm really busy right now so I couldn't spend much time doing this but I did 3 quick renders to compare.

Here's the Daz Horse 2 with the default mats:

Here's the Daz Horse 2 with the Design Anvil Iray Materials (the "Furry" preset - he also has one that does finer/more smooth hair):

Here's the Daz Horse 2 with DestinysGarden InaneGlory Iray Essentials:

I like them both and can see myself using them both. Even mixing the hair preset from one product and the coat setting from the other product - or using one over the other in different light settings or scenes. They're both great, imo! :)

For those only wanting to pick up one - I hope these quick renders can help you decide. :)

One thing to note is that it looks like the IDG one comes with presets for the Centaurs too. I don't have the centaurs so I couldn't test it and couldn't test if Design Anvils presets will work with the centaurs or not.

@L'Adair Thanks for the assist. :)

I ended up getting the DA presets for now. If they work on Centaur 7, great. If not, then I'll get the IDG set at a later date.

Thanks a lot Divamakeup, that is very helpful. I prefer the slightly glossy look on the DA ones, but they both look good.

  • Thanks for the comparison Diva, very helpful.

@Havos, This is correct. My point was anyone who doesn't have the Pro bundle—whether they got the Daz Horse 2 at another time, or are getting it now for free—will only have the three material sets. I just checked to verify and the IDG product uses the white horse textures from the Pro bundle for some of the image maps in other settings, such as Glossy Roughness and Top Coat Weight. As the white horse is only available in the Pro bundle, I recommend the DA product for anyone without the Pro bundle.

I know the IDG version gives excellent results, and I know DA makes top-notch products, so I expect his version will be excellent as well. (And I'm going to test that expectation shortly!)

I like the original DAZ Horse 2 materials best for groomed thoroughbreads.

    eg, & many more there:

For other types I guess you need to look up on a case by case basis.

I resurrected an old post from earlier in the year since it was about the same subject I had a question about. It must have been made during a different sale back in June. laugh

@Divamakeup Thanks for the renders. I hadn't seen them before my last post.

After experimenting with the DA settings on Centaur 7, they do work but it requires a fair amount of manual set up in the surfaces tab because the centaurs have additional parts and surfaces. It took me a while to figure out how to make it all work properly.

  • Now it makes sense to why I'm getting so many Liama sales !

Between Daz Horse 2 and Hivewire Horse, the bodies are pretty close.  There's a few extra bones in the HW Horse and it has some more flexibility.  It also has leg feathering (hair around the hoof), a better mane and tail, a foal, great looking draft horses and a fabulous unicorn.  DH2 has more wearable content and the HW Horse, aka "Harry," which only has a standard saddle and a western one, and that's it.  There is a converter for using DH2 tack on Harry.  DH2 poses won't work on Harry, and there are more poses available for DH2.

I own both - Harry is more expensive than DH2 - especially if you get him on sale.

If you are not adverse to doing post work, there are some wonderful PSD's by CWRW (at Rendo) for the mane and tail.  Here's an example (this is the HW Unicorn, which I converted to Iray.  The same techniques look just as great on DH2).

White horse is in the Starter bundle, so that is the minumum that is required. We should have done that differently. It was done differently in the centaur presets.I've heard you can splice in the bump map where ever the white horse map was used and get super similar results.

Hi, @DestinysGarden! Your product works beautifully with the white horse for a bump map. I didn't realize the white comes with the starter bundle, though. I checked my Product Library and see the Pro Bundle came with both "DAZ Horse 2 Starter Content" and "DAZ Horse 2 Pro Content"… shows how seldom I pay attention to the things listed there! lol

To be honest, as old as the Horse 2 is, seems like Daz should break the "starter content" and "pro content" out of the bundle and create new products from them that can be purchased separately. Especially if they continue to use the base Horse 2 and other products from the Bundles as free incentives to purchase new releases!. In my opinion, of course.
