Why would a Daz skirt outfit say "does not work on Mac OS"?

Seriously, can anyone tell me why this product has under details: "Please note: this product does not work on Mac OS."

Dynamic Circle Skirt

I can understand (sort of) about some plug-in makers not developing for Mac, but a clothing outfit? I've never seen this before, and can't conceive what the PAs could have built into this thing that would exclude Mac buyers. So far, they've excluded me.

I came across it in an otherwise futile search for a nice full above-the-knee-length skirt, something I thought I would find with ease. Boy, was I ever wrong! It seems Daz skirts are mostly either so short the panties show, or down to the ankles. What happened to moderation in skirt length? :)

My first guess would be that the earlier DAZ Studio's Dynamic Cloth Engine (this isn't dForce) it uses were dependent on external scripts that would cause it to not work on any OS that didn't support that language/flavor/brand. I recall that POSER used to use a lot of external Python scripts and it could cause all sorts of problems. I don't know the exact incompatabilities, but I'd bet it is something along this vein.

There's a note about not working on Mac on several Optitex-based products.

I believe that the plugin stopped working on Mac some OS versions ago - here's a bit from the Dynamic Clothing Control store page:

I am not sure, but I think when I first got into DS, I bought some OptiTex items and could not get it to work on my iMac. Didn't have a clue and didn't know how to ask at the time.

Later, when I moved to Win 10, no problems, once someone posted a good tutorial on the forums for how to use them.

Thanks to all for the various replies and explanations. I guess I should have known there was another "plugin" involved. Bleccccch!

I don't suppose that any of the available clothing converters could turn one of those products into plain old "clothing."

^The optitex clothing was rigged to work like conforming clothing too (for the most part) like the dForce clothing. It should (generally speaking) also work if you apply a dforce modifier to it (he says having never tried it himself).

I believe it would load on a Mac and work as conforming, just not be able to be dynamic with that older plugin. If it doesn't work out, there's always the 'within 30-day refund' option.

  • No, they don't work like conforming clothing. Ones needs to use the Dynamic Clothing Plugin for them.

Thanks, Silent Winter, for the suggestion and a ray of hope, and ...

Thank you, Catherine, for saving me the hassle of a purchase and return. Does anybody know of anything similar—that doesn't require a *&^%^&$# Mac-deficient plugin to be used?

Does it need to be for the third and fourth generation, or would you be using it on something more contemporary? Do you want just a skirt or a dress of that length? https://www.daz3d.com/dforce-multi-dress-system-for-genesis-8-females or the Meri May sets in the store might have some of the options you are looking for?

On the whole Optitex clothing works quite well with dForce. They are generally properly welded meshes, and relatively low poly. Just add the Dynamic Modifier, and then simulate. You might need to tweak the surface settings to get it to drape as desired, but my experience with them so far has been good.

Thanks, Almighty. (Don't get to say that nearly often enough.)

I plan to use this with G8 female, but I think that given the current state of character and clothing converters, and autofit, I can get most any era to work, if I have enough patience.

I have the multi-dress system, but it just doesn't have that 1950s sort of style in tightness of waist and fullness at length of skirt that the circle skirt has and that I'm looking for. I just looked at the MeriMay sets. Thanks for that pointer. It may have promise.

Well, if anybody ever has an aching hunger for completely contradictory opinions and/or facts on a question, they could not possibly do better than coming here. laugh

Thanks, Havos. It sounds to me like you have actual hands-on experience with this. Before I go spend money, though, I have a few specific questions:

    1. Have you done this on a Mac?

    2. Where and how exactly does one "Just add the Dynamic Modifier"? On a Mac.

I just spotted a 1950s type style dress over at rendo that MAY help you out in your search - it's not a skirt, but a dress with a halter neck so if a skirt is absolutely want you want, you may be able to play with trans maps or something like that to make the top gone? It's a dforce dress - it doesn't say anything about Mac tho. (I've been on a quest for '50s style outfits for G8 too). "Savoy dforce dress for Genesis 8" by Art Tailor over at rendo.

I'm pretty sure he's referring to the dForce dynamic modifier.

Agreed, this dress probably works well with dForce. Give it a try!

I think if you play around with primitive objects, like a torus, or a cylinder with the ends capped, create it the diameter of the skirt you want, and make the thickness minimal, then place it around the waist of your figure and use dForce, it'll probably drape like a circle skirt.  It works perfectly in Blender.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! That is utter perfection for what I need, and at a totally reasonable price.

And now, at almost the exact same time, the Daz 50's Glam for Genesis 2 Female(s) just went on sale, which I've been waiting and hoping for, so have grabbed that, too. (Call me cheap, but wasn't going to go full price for G2 wear.)

And by the way, in a similar vein is the Daz Take Me Back Dress for Genesis 2 Female(s), also on sale!

I am set now to re-create "Rebel Without a Cause" in Studio! (Oh, wait; maybe that's a little too ambitious.)

I'm pretty sure he could have just said so.

Ummmm, let me think about it ... No.

I'd rather stack greased BBs. But thanks for the suggestion.

It seems that my quest has been solved by premade, off-the-shelf products where someone else has done the creative technical heavy lifting.
